..which is really MMORPG backwards, but let's be honest here, would you have clicked on this topic if you had known in advance it was going to be about MMOs? I like to think I know my fellow Banshee a little, so I just had to trick him. Which should come as no surprise considering my alias. :p

Anyway. Save for The Old Republic we seem to have lost the general MMORPG forum, which is kind of a pity. I've been MMOing a bit here and there lately, and what annoys me to no end is that I can't seem to find a skill-wise complex, detailed game (allowing for unique, distinct character builds) like Anarchy Online that use a payment method more similar to Guild Wars.

I often leave games alone for several months at a time, so I don't want the pressure of subscription fees diminish my immersive experience when I do play. The main issue here is that what Guild Wars does, letting customers buy single expansions so they never have to worry about monthly fees, apparently doesn't really have one, specific name I can use in Google or Wikipedia searches to find other games.

I am left with the option of asking people directly on forums. I tried to on a couple of the bigger MMO sites, but it seemed to mostly either offend or amuse people who have no problem paying those fees. I received very little, usuable advice. GameBanshee is my last resort. I know people don't come here for the MMO's, but I know for a fact at least some here have played WOW and such.

In addition to complexity, detailedness and payment method I need to mention that I am not a fan of the High Fantasy genre or overly Asian MMORPG's. I prefer the style of Anarchy Online, but to be perfectly honest I will swallow all my pet peeves if the game compensates enough for it by other means. Does anyone have any suggestions?

at the moment I still play WoW, mostly just to raid with friends. but out of the forthcoming mmo's the only one that's really caught my interest is Secret World. take HP Lovecraft, urban legends, conspiracy theories and some ancient mythology and mix it together in a modern day setting, without levelling and an unusual take on class/roles, throw in some puzzles... oh and it's by the guy behind The Longest Journey and Dreamfall... it's looking pretty damned interesting

last I heard they haven't confirmed whether it'll be subscription based or not, but most of the community are assuming that it will be
I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me

Funcom is the Norwegian company that made Anarchy Online, isn't it? That's a plus at least. I doubt they'll use the Guild Wars payment method as they seem to be rather fond of micro transactions and such. Perhaps they'll make it free-to-play, like they did with AO.
