Need some tips on main character

Post by Sloty1984 »

Hi!
After complete Baldurs Gate 2 I want to try this fantastic game again.
I have some questions on my nameless one:

1.Which stats are the most important/how high should I increase each stat during the game?

2.What character class do you think is the most satisfying to pick?(I know one can change it,but I want to pick one and mostly stick to it).

3.What are good mods out there to enhance joy of the game?

1. Depends on how you want to play the game. Do you want to be a wimp hiding behind party members who's even afraid of respawning standard street thugs or do you want to protect your party members by taking the lead into the battle ?

2. Depends on how you want to play the game. All 3 classes work.

3. You don't need any.

The most important stat for dialogue and memories is wisdom. The other stats aren't really important for this, almost every time you get an int-based or cha-based option you also get a wis-based one which is at least as good.
You also get an XP bonus and luck bonus (do more damage in combat and take less damage from spells) depending on wis.
I'd get it to 19 early and raise other stats afterwards.

Con is the combat stat, besides bonus hit points it also affects HP regeneration speed which is nice since places to rest are rare, it's annoying to go there and there's no one able to cast healing spells during the first half of the game. If it's high enough you'll regenerate several hit points per round and be invincible, if it's low you'll have a hard time surviving.
If you start with 14+ con you'll have 10 more hit points than you'd get if you start with 9 and raise it to this value later.
If you want an extra challenge just keep con down at 9-14 for the game.

The little AC bonus high dex grants for combat isn't that important, even a thief with only 9 dex works perfectly since you get more than enough thieving skill points when you level up.

Strength is for doing damage, since there's no armor in the game there's no need for carrying capacity. Either leave it at 9-10 or get it to 18. Don't waste points to raise it to 18/.., boosts from other sources will jump directly from 18 to 19.

There's no benefit in having more than 18 int (including equipment), even for mages. Even with 9 int spell scribing is always successful. There's no penalty for low int and even if you start a mage with only 12 int he'll reach 18 during the game. There are items you can use to raise int temporarily as high as you want. Starting with more than 16 is totally wasted.

High cha grants better rewards, a few additional options and cheaper shop prices. Mages get the "friends" spell but there are also useable items to raise it temporaily.

In order to leave the mortuary peacefully you need at least 11+ dex (snap necks) or 12+ cha (dialogue). But you can simply kill the two nameless dustmen guards who can't be convinced with wisdom (don't kill anything else on this floor) on the ground floor, get killed afterwards and return, the others on the floor will have forgotten and not be hostile anymore.

I'd start with 18 wis, 14 con and 16 str and raise it to 19-14-18 at the next 3 level ups. Afterwards raise con if you want more hitpoints and faster regeneration, else whatever you like.
You can also keep str low, rely on strength spells and spend the points elsewhere, as long as wis is high for dialogue and con for surviving you won't have any serious trouble.

1) As mentioned Wisdom and Constitution are really the ones you want the most of.

2) Mage..... but that's really a personal preference. You'll get by with a warrior or a thief just as well. So stick with whichever class you like playing yourself.

3) Torment, unlike it's more famous cousin BG2, does not have a lot of mods to begin with, but I would recommend installing Bigg's Widescreen Mod, Ghostdog's UI Mod, Ultimate Fixpack, Unfinished Business Mod, and The Tweak Pack. Thanks to the wonderful folks at GOG.com and a nice fellow named ThunderPeel2001 a nice guide on how to install all these mods can be found by going to Mod spotlight: Planescape: Torment mods guide - General discussion - Forum - - GOG.com

If you want to get all the story stuff, go for wisdom. I forgot how high you should boost it, was it 18 or 20 or something to unlock all the memories and stuff?

The combat stat is CON like mentioned above, you can boost stats VERY high in PST, and when you boost CON through the roof, you will regenerate health way faster than anyone can damage you, making you practically unbeatable.

You can forget the other stats.
The problem is that the people with the most ridiculous ideas are always the people who are most certain of them.

My favourite character:

18 Int
18 Wis
Rest in Con
Then raising Wis asap to 25. Don't forget you get Wis bonus from for example.
After Wis all the other points can go into Con. You are a super tough nearly immortal mage with extremly high Wis score and earn exp bucketfull.
Keeping other attributes at sarting value.
For fighter I'd do the same just getting Str to 18 and keeping Int at base value or maybe 10.
As rogue I'd get 18 Dex and allocate into Wis and Con still.
Otherwise same setup still. 25 Wis earns you the highest amount of exp possible and it's attainable at level 6 with the Wis bonus from O.
Afterwards you can easily pump up Con to 20 or higher depending on your final level.

That way you get most out of the story of the game. It is still doable to just rush through with a brute melee fighter who just pumps Con, Str and Dex of course. Or a rogue with Dex and Char. I just think you miss out on too much not going heavy into wisdom.

Getting out of the Mortuary isn't a problem just get the zombie disguise from the Anarch spy on the starting floor and you can easily escape via the portal Deionarra opens for you if you are nice with her.

Don't forget to decide on your morality early. You can get some really surprising outcomes if you chose to solve stuff differently.

A luck bonus from WIS on damage rolls? Can anyone explain and confirm that?

You get +1 luck with 15-17, +2 luck with 18-24 and +3 luck with 25 wis.
Luck improvess dice rolls, if you roll a d4 for damage with a dagger with +1 luck bonus a roll of 1 is increased to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 stays 4.
+1 luck also raises to hit rolls by 1, therefore you have a 5 percent higher chance to hit and to scrore a critical.
If you're hit by spells like magic missile the damage rolls are also improved by 1 with +1 luck, 2,3,4,5 (3.5 average) damage you take with a missile are reduced to 2,2,3,4 (2.75 average) damage, buff spells like strength cast at your character have also better effects, +1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 are improved to +2,3,4,5,6,7,8,8.
