Exiting quest log crashes game

I had a bunch of hacks that were removing some of my attacks so I uninstalled everything to start over, but when I reinstalled, all of a sudden my game would crash whenever I tried to exit the quest log. With the latest patch installed, it would crash immediately, but with the patch uninstalled, it just kind of freezes and shows the talk icon like I'm back in the game, but if I hit another key to bring up another menu, it just disappears without even giving me a notice that it crashed.

By "latest patch" do you mean version 1.2 which was the last official patch, or are you using one of the unofficial patches?
