You beat me by 3 levels, my Elf Magi only made it to level 22.

Also Arcane Warrior & Spirit Healer, but I used zero spells from Arcane Warrior and all 4 from Spirit Healer.

All 16 spells from Entropy, all 4 from Mage, 4 from Primal and 1 from Creation - 29 in total (you had 31 in total, which seems a bit harsh considering you had 3 levels on me!).

You must have spent a lot of money on skill books, I tended to ignore these and as a result only had Master Combat Training, Master Herbalism, Improved Poison Making and Combat Tactics - 11 in total compared to your 12.

In terms of equipment, I ended up with the same set of items (there really isn't that much choice in the game to make clothing a great conversation topic) except the following:

Staff: Winter's Breath (I did a thread, now on page 2, comparing Winter's Breath to the Staff of the Magister Lord as I thought the Magister Lord was certainly NOT worth 128gp)
Belt: Destructionist's Belt
Amulet: The Spell Ward
Ring: Ring of Ages (20% to ALL resistances except the unusually secretive Spell Resistance)

In terms of base stats:
Strength: 14
Dexterity: 16
Willpower: 35
Magic: 70
Cunning: 17
Constitution: 36

Total: 188 stat points to your 173

So you seemed to like the more defensive aspects of Willpower and Constitution whereas I preferred the more offensive maxing of Magic.

I only spent 644 gold, but that's probably because you forked out for the Staff of the Magister Lord.

Some stats I took more interest in, or rather was trying my best to tweak with the above information was:

Mental Resistance: 46
Physical Resistance: 18
Fire Resistance: 40%
Cold Resistance: 45%
Electric Resistance: 20%
Nature Resistance: 20%
Spirit Resistance: 20%

Some decent Spell Resistance (but this stat is not listed in the menus)

Health: 299
Mana: 296
Fatigue: 11.7%

Armour: 32
Defence: 98
Spellpower: 78
Damage: 32.6

Contribution to party damage: 35%
Greatest Damage Dealt: 289
Hit Rate: 95%
Kills: 934

So I would be interested to know how your set-up translated into end-result stats.

My stats are not 100% perfect as the furthest back save I have is from the very beginning of the Awakenings expansion in Vigil's Keep, just after recruiting that mage fella who the Templars had arrested - and I can't remember if you get any free stats at the start of awakenings.

Even still, since you definitely had at least 3 levels on me, I'm a bit surprised you weren't trouncing me on every stat!

I look forward to seeing your second level stats!

Oh heavens, I meant without any spell buffs, there's a whole array of spell buffs to alter defensive and offensive stats. The Arcane Warrior one does look like a good one though, is it a passive permanent skill rather than a long-term casted buff?

Edit: Scratch that, I think I did have a buff or two on when noting my stats.

Cool stuff!

I think this stat comparison proves that Dragon Age does have some variety of builds available.

I made a concious effort to max out damage and spellpower, and it's clear that by doing so you can get radically different results to someone who tries to find a more fully rounded max build.

Whether these specific differences make much difference to gameplay is probably the drawback to Dragon Age, as I suspect your route to the end was probably as straight forward as mine.

I think your build is probably about as superior as a build can get, so I'm therefore quite surprised I managed a massive 100pt better Greatest Damage Dealt stat.

Apart from the odd small victory in such areas though, mine does, oddly, seem the weaker mage!

Lol

As other have said, the "best fit" build depends firstly on you personal style preferences, then on the build of your other partners.

This time through my mage line up is Morrigan (offense) and Wynne (defense, healing and some offense). Before giving the stats and kit, please note I have Dark Times installed (and completed) and am 85% through Quests and Legends. Both of these mods are challenging and in nightmare mode give you not only great XP accelleration but also special gear and money earning opportunities.

Morrigan currently has the following stats, pre-Landsmeet
  • Level 25
  • Strength 44
  • Dex 43
  • Willpower 76
  • Magic 99
  • Constit 40
She iis kitted out with many non-vanilla items (marked with *)
* Sardok's Wrath (staff) +5 all attributes, 6.25 mana generation, 50 spell resistance
* Dark Spark (sword) +8 magic, 3 defense, 6% critical chance, 2.5M mana generation
Eamon's Shield
Cinderfella gauntlets
* Veras cowl + 8 all attributes, 15 spellpower, decreased hostility, 15% dodge attacks, 50% mental resistance
Vestments of the seer
*Eleven Girdle +5 to all attributes, 20% to healing effects, 1 stamina generation ,100 stamina
Spellward
Key to the City
*Magus war boots 12 defense

This gives her 16 armour, 98 defense, 104 spellpower and 39.1 attack on main hand

She has the followng specialities
Arcane Warrior
Shapeshifter
* Necromancer (Dark Times)
* Kalderas Familiars (Q&L)
* Kalderas lore single target
* Malderas lore Mass Effect (Ideomeneas has a sense of humur...)

Her attacks use principally the ice specialities (all 4), coupled with all four mana spells + lightning (3) - giving a useful combination (storm of ....)
She has the first 3 fire spells giving close up and distance attack capabilities
She has all 4 hexes, which when combined with the 4 Drain Life - Death Cloud spells also gives powerful extra combinations
Stonefist has been added by console to enable her to underrtake some of the Q&L mage-solo tasks

Wynne is a master healer/buffer plus Arcane Warrior to enable her to protect herself. Her attack is given by grease (another combo with Morrigan's fire...), all 4 mage spells to get arcane mastery attacks. Stonefist+petrify are also used; weakness, paralyse and miasma are also used to hinder the opposition

Finally, "one second spell cooldown" is added so that spells recycle rapidly - don't try Quests and Legends on nightmare without it ......

It's a bit of a long post, but it does illustrate that builds are very adaptable within a great product

The cowl, staff etc are either Dark Times or Quests and Legends - they are substantial mods where each takes up as much time as the main DOA plot. They also have the merit of being played INSIDE the main DA:O plot so that your character build goes a lot further.

Dark Times introduces new specialites, spells and lots of new equipment. The plot and voice acting is amazingly good. The second part is under development - look it up on the Bioware and/or Nexus forum.

Quests and Legends goes way beyond this and requires a total rethink of tactics - cut and slash it totally out of the question, even on the Easy level. You'll need plenty of bandwidth to download them (each is around 1Gb or more...). Voice acting could be better, but the plot is good and you really need to think outside of your normal way of doing things.

Both mods add interesting recruitable characters with personal quests for you to complete.

When I said ice "specialities" for Morrigan, I meant ice spells - sorry if unclear
