Fallout 2 keeps on 'a crashin'

Post by Jurrak »

Hello!

I've recently started replaying Fallout 2, the great game that it is. I've made my way through all the Klamath and Den quests, the only one left (other than "Find the G.E.C.K.") is to free Vic from the slavers. So, I figure I don't want to pay anything and instead go slaughter Metzger and his men (also, cause it's awesome).
So, I've slaughter the slavers, free Vic (he joins me as a companon) and I notice I only have like 10 HP left, so I go to Pip-boy and choose "Wait until the party is healed". The timer goes on for a bit, and then the game crashes ("Application error" and black-screen). I try it a few times, keeps on happening.
Alright, so I decided to get a room at an Inn or something. I walk across the map, trying to get to the Westside, and it crashes again. Everytime I try to rest or leave the map. So, now I'm stuck in Eastside Den with a few addicts and a pile of corpses.
I tried updating my game (and I did), but still, playing on 1.20, it keeps on crashing. I tried searching around, but nothing I found worked. So, I turn here for help.

If anyone knows how I might be able to fix it, do tell, please?
Please?

What OS are you using? Windows 7? Also, where did you install the game?

In case you are using Win 7 or Vista (don't have much experience with Vista but as far as I know the following things apply to it as well) you should try following things:
 • Run the game as administrator
 • Make sure the game is not installed under folder "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)"
 • Run the game in Windows XP compatibility mode
Few things you should try if the above things don't work to you or you are using other operating system:
 • Check if the problem occurs with earlier saves as well
 • Reinstall the game
 • If you didn't use the "Humongous" option while installing, reinstal the game with that option
As for patching, while 1.2 is last official patch I suggest to install unofficial patches as well. I think the highest version is 1.5 and Killap's patch, don't remember offhand which one would contain the most recent updates.

Also note that, as far as I remember, patching may cause saves to become corrupted or not all fixes gets applied to saves from older version. So after fully patching I suggest starting a new game.

Finally, even with the latest unofficial patches the game is still somewhat buggy, so random crashes may happen. Best thing I can suggest is, as you haven't got too far yet, to start again. Most probably you won't experience the same problem in new game.

EDIT:
After quick checking I suggest that you install Killap's Unofficial Fallout 2 Patch after installing official 1.2 patch. It should contain all the fixes presented by 1.4 and 1.5 unofficial patches, probably even more.

Thanks for all the help, friend, but, it seems the problem just fixed itself up. I simply tried to walk off the map again and it was fine, strange enough, but cool with me. Still, I've never before heard of this "Killap's patch", which, as I've just discovered is an awesome thing, so, thanks a bunch, I owe you a cookie.

No problems.

Also, if you decide to start new game with updated version of the game (honestly I don't recommend playing with official 1.2 patch only because of all the game breaking bugs still present), I would suggest to install Fallout Restoration Project made by Killap.

It includes all the fixes in presented by the patch I linked earlier as well as enables lots of things that were either cut off from finished game or were impossible to see due some serious bugs/missing content. So basically it doesn't contain anything not meant to be in vanilla game though some of the contents have been finished by the author of mod as those were still unfinished.

In my opinion, if you use the the Restoration Project -mod lots of things makes more sense in side quests.
