I wish GB would get the search feature fixed.
I am sure there have been a number of threads about the Jarlaxle quest in the Underdark. But not wanting to search hundreds of pages I will ask the following. I took the rope from Visaj and entered Deirex's lair. Took him down with no problem. My Paladin had Carsomyr and Immy hit him with PW: Silence before he could cast a spell. Began searching the place and when I found Deirex's gems the game went to a cut screen and started the Jarlaxle scene. I accepted the quest, like I had a choice, and was returned to the outside of the lair. I went back in and figured I would be recalled to Jarlaxle when I did. But I was not, and have tried entering both levels of the lair, have put the gems back and taken them again, and have slept once and tried all the above once again but Jarlaxle does not pull me back to his pocket place. Interestingly, even though I had already killed Deirex, Jarlaxle spoke during the scene as if I still needed to kill him!?! In addition to this, I didn't have an option in our conversation to give him the gems he wanted me to recover even though I already had them during the cut scene. Is this a bug? It has been a while since I have done this part of the game but cannot recall any hiccups when I did.

Jarlaxle *Mild spoilers*
UNCOMMON VALOR WAS A COMMON VIRTUE
Yes it's a bug, it's happened to me numerous times, the only solution is to reload a save from before you killed him and try again. As the reward isn't, in my opinion, worth the hassle I don't even bother with it any more.

I think you're not supposed to kill the lich on the first visit in the tower. You're supposed to enter the tower, get imprisoned by the lich, meet Jarlaxle, accept the quest and then confront the lich a second time, killing it.
I like that quest, mostly because the dialogue with Jarlaxle shows a different mentality than the usual "kill! kill! kill!" norm of the drow, and because I often need more decent leather armours. What I don't like is how he blackmails us by threatening to reveal our identity, which has already been done once by the fish in the tank.

You're right. I tried it again and gave Deirex a chance to speak and then he "tried" to imprison me. Jarlaxle's rope prevents that and whisked me to his pocket plane. I had the conversation with Jarlaxle and then was sent back to finish the task. It had been such a long time since I did this one I had forgotten to not immediately pounce on Deirex on sight. It all came back to me once it went normally this time. Evidently I had fortunately not reacted so fast on my last playthrough so I didn't experience this problem. THANKS!
