Pools of Darkness fresh party advice

Post by Blomdor »

Hi again, everybody. It's been some time since I last came here. Good to see that the forums are still around, and I hope you've been doing well. A long while ago, I asked for help with the previous Gold Box games in this series; the advice I received was very useful, and I hope to once again call upon your experience to help get me started on the final installment.

See...I had intended to go through Secret of the Silver Blades with a party full of dual-classed human fighters/paladins/rangers. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, it didn't work out. I found the team incredibly boring and swiftly burned out on what is already the most tedious and dull of the Gold Boxes I've played. It was many months before I had it in me to try again, and when I did I got my brother to help me out with team design. We came up with Paladin, Ranger, Fighter, Cleric, Fighter/Mage, and Fighter/Mage/Thief. Finally, some early spell power and some races other than plain ol' hunam. We've made it a decent enough ways, now, and I'm confident I'll finish the game if rather slowly. The problem is that this team has at least one character who will not progress beyond his Silver Blades power level; the F/M/T technically will continue to gain thief levels but I don't see that being all too useful. I therefore imagine that I'll need to start anew when I get to Pools, and - apologies for being long winded only to end with this very simple question - I'm wondering what team you guys would recommend for using only single-classed, fresh characters. This take-9-levels-of-this-then-sit-around-waiting-for-9-levels-of-that stuff is really not my thing.

Thanks to anyone who reads through all that junk, and thanks double if you feel like speaking up!

If this is the game I am thinking of which is back when in the days of having copy write protection via journal entries here is what I would did.

Samuel Paladin
?? Ranger (damage versus giants which helps for some early xp)
Ashmaer Cleric
?? Cleric (resurections in battles)
Kor Thief 13/ Mage x
Taliesin Mage

A trick (I think) is you can wear armor as a ranger x/mage y (but I didn't know about that my original party).

I have a fun memory of playing Lloths dimension a little high (and mighty) and there was a huge spider actually in our basement room where the computer was. I flicked out a fairly sharp paring knife (for cheese and crackers) and lopped off the head of the spider. Vorpal sword?
Right Speech has four aspects: 1. Not lying, but speaking the truth, 2. Avoiding rude and coarse words, but using gentle speech beneficial to the listener, 3. Not slandering, but promoting friendliness and unity, 4. Avoiding frivolous speech, but saying only what is appropriate and beneficial.
