IMO Stephen King's best work has been the stuff that isn't his average horror stories. "Different Seasons" is a collection of four novellas, rather macabre, but not his standard horror fare. (The two short stories Viv mentioned, which were adapted into movies, are from this book.) Even better, and probably my favourite SK, is the Dark Tower series (three books so far, with more hopefully on the way). It's not horror, it's fantasy, and great reading as I recall - though it's been a while

Do you like Borges? I like him - IMO he is one of the best short story writers of the 20th century.

I have always read a lot, both fiction and non fiction. As a kid and teenager, I used to go to the library and borrow 20-30 books at the time, and return then a month or so later. Libraries are great!

I forgot Stephen Ambrose, excellent writer. He wrote the Band of Brothers, good non-fiction book and many others on WW2

@Yshania: Yeah, Donaldson is a great writer. Speaking of this Eco guy, what kind of books does he/she write? Also, while we are on the topic of books, are the dragon books by Anne McFarrey(sp?) books good?

The Pern books by Anne McCaffrey?

I've not read'em because I can't figure out which one is the first one. Random Shadow has read quite a few of them and simply adores them. She's been trying to convince me to read them. Considering how good her Acorna books are, I'd say the Pern books are probably very good as well.

@humanflyx: re Umberto Eco, check my post on page 1. He is a professor in philosophy (semiotics - ie the knowledge about signs and symbols and their meaning and interpretation) and he writes in the "modern synthetic" style. His works are stuffed with philosophical questions, history, and references to literature, art and science. His language is absolutely great. At the same time his books are exciting and entertaining to read.

Once I finish the umpteen jillion books I'm currently reading, I'll have to check out this guy's work. Sounds interesting.
