my deepest sympathies. I live in the midwest and it is an odd feeling to be so close yet so far removed from the atrocities in new york and D.C. All I can do is read. You give blood, you donate money but it seems like so little help. It is such a frustrating feeling that you feel you cannot do enough. Driving home from work at one of the overpasses over the highway, four young adults were waving U.S. flags. It was truly an overwhelming good feeling and had traffic crawling for miles.

yeah i know. my favorite radio station and others are having fund raising all over the city.they even have a motto:

GO TEAM AMERICA

they are even playing patriotic songs and it's an alternative radio station!

Anyone here ever heard Kenny G's millenium mix of Auld Lang Syne(sp?)? The country stations out here are playing 3(possibly more) country songs that they've done that type of thing to. One of them is about being proud to be American.

On that note, I must say that the way the US is uniting together to deal with this has restored my pride in being an American.

It still hasn't surpassed my pride at being a Texan, of course.

yup. he told me how he got rid of his accent by watching british shows. now you can't tell if he's a texan unless he tells.

BTW, where did you get the idea that I don't like being a Texan? I'm PROUD to be a Texan. In fact, today, I almost got in a fight with three men in my Intro To Programming class because they were dissing Texas. I say almost because there is no chance I could've won an outright fight, so I avoided that.

As a European who has only visited the US as a tourist (and never been to Texas) - is being Texan connected to any particular prejudices?

Uh...well, Texans generally don't like Ohklahoma, but that's more of a joke/rivalry thing than any real prejudice. It does seem to be true, though, that Texans are the only ones who have a fairly extreme amount of pride in our state.

. not really. it's just people from the state of texas either love or hate texas...in extremes. myself, i don't care really. i've been to texas only for basic training and then job training. lets just say i wasn't impressed.

When you visit, I recommend the Texas Hill Country. If you love shopping like I do, you'll simply adore all the little shops in Fredricksburg.

well, have have to go back to texas anyway for my brother in law's wedding in november. i think the closest major city is dallas about 2 hours away. i don't like the idea that i have to drive for 2 hours just to see a city skyline. but oh well, not everyone lives in a big city.

Heh, Dallas is bad. IF you want to go to a big city and the closest is Dallas, keep going until you get to Fort Worth. It may not be as big as Dallas or as metropoliton(sp?), but it's a heckuva lot better than Dallas.

BTW, Jenna, I'm guessing you're a city girl, ne?

@CE I hope you can sleep better too. You need to get that great mind refreshed if we're ever going to continue the evolution debate, though, in light of all that has happened, human origins just don't seem very important anymore...

well, look slike i showed up just in time to defend texas...
i love texas and everything texan, there was a whole topic posted called something like"is everyone here from texas?" i think it was actually posted in the baldurs gate2 section. check it out for my stances on texas.

but as for patriotic songs being played, i'm all for it.
and that song, "proud to be an american" is by lee greenwood and was produced back during the desert storm days

It means that come Hell or high water, when the chips are down and the Good Lord is watching, we're Texans by damned, and just like in 1836, that counts for something.

so, i'll step off my horse now and just say, remember the Alamo and God bless Texas
