The best party to take!
(1)Your Character(Fighter)-Using Flail of ages and Celestial fury having max proficiency in both and 2 weapon style.
(2)Korgan-Using Frostreaver/Stonefire and Crom Faeyr having max proficiency in both and 2 weapon style.
(3)Minsc-Using Silverblade having max proficiency in 2 handed weapon and Style.
(4)Keldorn-Using Holy avenger same as minsc.
(5)Imoen-You need a theif might as well have both children of bhaal.
(6)Edwin/Viconia-Need some kind of mage/wiz do tell me which one is better.
This is for going through the game with ease i had no trouble with any part(any part) and for taking into the expansion. Please tell me who you think is better edwin or viconia.

first of all, that might be a very good party but will have a lot of conflicks. minsc would try to kill edwin or viconia and keldorn would try to kill edwin or viconia as well. might be ok with korgen. but your party is mixed with good and evil ali. it simply won't work, they will break up. even you character is neutral, you'll have to choose using minsc + keldorn or edwin + viconia.
secondary, edwin and viconia are different, edwin is a mage, and viconia is a cleric. can't really compare them, it depends which class you need, anomen could replace viconia( i am not saying who is better, don't quate me, just saying they are the same class). as aerie is good at both job. it works for good parties. for evil parties, have edwin and viconia 2gether and damn both minsc and keldorn

Mizuno is a Proud Member of the Brotherhood of the Woods
IIRC the only NPC who has a problem with Viconia is Keldorn(Minsc and Edwin will fight if they are in the same party for too long).

Whew, talk about a subjective post.
PC (whatever)
Keldorn - Carsomyr
Jaheira - Belm scimitar, sling of Everard, staff of the Woodlands
Minsc - Lilarcor, Heartseeker bow, or dual-wield Flail of Ages and Mace of Disruption
Aerie - Crom Faeyr
Yoshimo (until Asylum) - Dual-wield Celestial Fury and Scarlet Ninja-to
Imoen (after Asylum) - Staff of the Magi
This is a great good-aligned party. The only person you might want to substitute is Aerie. If you can put up with her whining and know how to use her to the greatest effect, though, she rocks. Just for sh!ts and giggles, I'll pick on all the rest of the good-aligned characters.
Cernd is worthless. Due to the level 14 limit for druids, Jaheira can max out her druid class as easily as Cernd can, although she retains her fighter abilities.
Jan is actually a pretty good character, though I passed him up since I needed a mage capable of casting 6th, 7th, and 8th level spells.
Nalia is just a weaker version of Imoen. I don't care if Nalia can be temporarily a level or two ahead of Imoen; Imoen can and will hit the exp cap just as easily, has better thieving skills, and extra spells. She rocks.
Anomen's not bad, though pretty annoying. He's a lot like Jaheira, though a tad more flexible in terms of weapons. As far as romances go, there's really no contest.
Valygar seems like he'd be a good character, but I never really found any use for him. Backstabbing is cool, but stalkers aren't very good at it, his limited use of armor makes him an ineffective tank, and his spellcasting abilities aren't up to par.
Mazzy's a cool character. I didn't pick her up because doing so meant I'd have to drop someone slightly more critical to the story.
So there you have it. This post is absolutely worthless, but I'm bored, and it was fun writing it.

Imoen-bommerang dagger + 2 and a good bow
minsc-flail of the ages, warblade + 4 and dragons breath +4
aerie-staff of the magi and hammer of thunderbolts+2 (no crom faeyr )
jaheira-clerics staff+3 and staff of thunder and lightening
and also my interchangable character, either keldorn anomen or edwin.

There simply is no single greatest party. There are parties that are particularly good if you enjoy conversation, and parties that are great if you prefer multiclass characters, or a particular alignment, or have a preference for melee or magic. No one party can do it all, and part of the fun in BG2 is building different, equally good parties who must approach the same tasks in different ways.
I've played the game through twice, and have my third party (deep in chapter 2) on hold since the announcement of the expansion pack. I've tried different configurations, and enjoyed all of them. I recommend the same to you.

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
I agree with fable... thats what makes this game so great. I'll finish playing my current game as a LG Undead Slayer and start another as a CN Kensai/Thief and have a substantially different game.
