Gargoyles

How do you get the gargoyles to lower the drawbridge in the 2nd level of the catacombs? I have tried all variations of conversation with them using the gargoyle mouth but it doesn't work. Also I read that you need a thief to get through some doors in the lower keep, is this true?

If I remember correctly what did the trick for me was that you tell them that you are injured. In the conversation that follows they ask you how badly injured you are. Tell them that you are badly injured and they say but not too injured to be a good fight and then then lower the bridge.
