Irenicus helping as a NPC?

Post by TheHalflingBarb »

heya people

this is my first post on the board but i feel like an old timer. i have been lurking here for months and feel like i know all of you ;)

anyway, to my question;
i have started bg2 soa about 20 times now with different characters and played different amounts... never getting much farther than the shadow dragon. finally i made a solo halfling barbarian and am absolutely loving it. the thing is, tonight i went to the goverment district and met jon irenicus out the front of the cowled wizard thingomajiggy. i asked him to help me and he accepted. iam now using him as an npc. is this normal? i guess it is, its just i have never had this before and have never read anything about it in any faq's. i checked dan simpsons guide just before but found no evidence that this happens in every game?

so if this is normal, how long do i keep him for? should i simply nick all his stuff like that wizardry ring / robes etc? irenicus rocks... having a level 17 mage this early on (chapter 3) is damn awesome.. should i go kill firkraag etc now while i still have him as such a powerful ally?

anyway - thanks in advance for any replies. i guess ill be a regular on here from now on =)

What?

I have never heard anything like this before! You have Irenicus as an NPC?! Crazy. I'll await someone more knowledgable than I to answer your question, because now I am very, very curious.

And: Welcome! Enjoy your stay.

The Darkest Day- an unofficial expansion to BG2. It has a huge amount of add ons, add ins, characters and NPC's.

I know of a mod that'll allow Irenicus and Ellisime as NPCs.

Have you installed anything save some official patches and maybe Baldurdash fixpack?

i've never heard of anything like that either...
the only comparable thing i've heard of is using [ctrl] + Q to add random people to your party...
heh, i've added adalon (silver dragon)....grand mastery in all weapons is pretty cool..
anyways, that irenicus npc thing is kinda cool...maybe i'll go look for that patch...

hmm

no im sure i have never downloaded anything allowing him as an npc. my game is totally unpatched (no balderdash etc) except for the xp caps and one ring file that i added to the override dir (replaces the talos ring or something).

he is a fantastic npc. with the ring of wiz and all he is truley mighty. makes edwin seem highly laughable. basically his story was something like that he too was imprisoned and that for now at least he will help you. he also keeps on about your potential just like in the beginning and in the dreams. i wonder if he would interact with other npc's if i wasnt soloing (well... now duoing ;P)

he is extremely cool... but i guess it messes with the plot a big.. hehe. could change his name in shadowkeeper to "jak irenicus - little brother of jon" =P

I'm REAL interested in what's gonna happen next. Will the plot continue normally? What if you meet Bodhi? Will she join your party as well? Bringing her entire guild with her?? Pretty soon you'll have no-one left to fight! :)

Now people, let's not be too hasty in our judgements. I'm sure HalflingBarb is on the level. After all, did we ever dream of having Sarevok as a NPC in our BG1 times? And look what ToB gave us.

Still, a screenshot WOULD be nice...

Ok, I did some checking after I read this post. What I found is that you most definately have installed the Jon Irenicus custom NPC patch from Manveru's site - or at least a patch that is similar to that. This is what the Read Me file say (I've only copy part of it):
-He is 17th mage level (original had 29th) and experience a bit higher than xp cap (actually he is planned to be an NPC in ToB).
-I gave him some equipment (staff +2, robe of evil archimagi, ring of wizardry)

Where we could find him :
He is in front of the Council building in Government District
with one condition : You must be curently in chapter 2 or higher.
Check to see if you have the following files in the Override directory of BG2:
- ar1000.bcs
- interdia.2da
- irenic.bcs
- Irenic.cre
- irenic.dlg
- irenicd.bcs
- IrenicP.dlg
- npclevel.2da
- pdialog.2da
- shouti.bcs

thanks sabre

yeah thats it. thanks.

thing is - i have NO recollection of actually installing that patch. maybe someone sent it to me as a mistake as i have had a few people send me xp cap files.

anyway... its pretty cool... i do recommend it. its quite professionally done. im not sure if i want to use him for now or not.... sure having him on my side is cool - but i had planned to solo =\

sorry to cause so much confusion people =)

No problem, if anyone want to get these Custom NPC, go to Manveru's Site - although I think he have another one now - can't remember where it is - the last time he updated this site 5/8/01.

Manveru's site works still, and so does his download section.
