I have seen this touched upon, but does anybody REALLY know what BG2 does for those characters that specialize in missile weapons? It is my understanding that the spec. to mastery benefits should not apply to any ranged attack. Is this the way it is in PnP?
If anyone knows, I'd like to see it broken doen for the benefits for each level of specialization.
Bottom line: is it a waste to put more than one * in a ranged attack weapon?

2nd Edition AD&D PnP -
One * allows use without penalty
Two ** gives NOTHING
Three *** equates to normal 'specialisation' (i.e. +1 to hit and +2 damage)
BG2 -
The bonuses are identical in respect to hit and damage only - attacks/speed factors etc. aren't applied.
Therefore, it is worth specialising in BG2 (** - Or 3 in PnP), not beyond that - only 5 ***** gives you +2 to hit and +3 damage. Not really woth it is it?
