Door Problem.

Post by Mahdi »

Ok I know this seems really stupid, but I have truly gotten stuck here.

In the Mindflayer area in the underdark, I have come upon a door which I cannot open. I don't think it is locked or anything, it's just that I apparently can't see enough of the door to get the "door" icon, hence I can't open it. This is truly annoying, and if anyone can help I'd be very grateful. The door in question id the door from the arena to the room to the left of the arena. There are two doors and the first I can open, which gets me into the corridor but the second one to actually get me into the room is the one I can't get.
ie the door into room 10 comming from room 6 on the map published in the walkthrough.

THOSE doors. We had quite a go-round up here because of them, a while back. :D If those are the doors that give you a message about needing godlike strength or wisdom to breach, you have two options: 1) Turn into the Slayer to open 'em. Even though you could achieve the same strength using a potion, that latter won't work. 2) Mind-control an illithi (be careful, there are two different kinds of mindflayers present, and if you control the wrong one--whose genus I forget--it won't be able to open the door). Use the collars yoyu gained from the prison dimension.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

This scenario has driven me nuts every time I've played the game. I always forget about the mind controlling circlet.

A mind flayer who can open the door is in the room where they keep reappearing. I believe it is a room on the eastern side of the map north of where the slaves are kept. Anyway, there is a mind flayer in there and if you kill him, another will spawn shortly thereafter (thus creating the loop that you will always be able to find a mind flayer to open the door). Get a bracelet and charm the mind flayer, then, lead him to the door and have him open it. As soon as he does I believe he turns on the party so be wary.

Additionally, I think the door he has to open is the west door in the room directly west of the initial entrance to the lair. I don't believe the west door of the arena can be opened. Not 100% sure here.

Little cheat: Since that flayer keeps respawning, you can just keep whacking him for experience while the rest of the party finishes the dungeon. You can probably kill him 25+ times and rack up a ton of easy xp's.
Crush enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the women.

no no not those doors, just an ordinary door, but it seems to be set at such an angle that I can't see enough of it to open it. Normally you can walk pretty close to a door and thereby "see" the other side of it and when you move you mouse over the now visible doorside your pointer changes to the open door pointer. This door however has a relatively elaborate wall structure over it and therefore you cannot get very close to the actual door from the side I'm comming from. This leads to the room which you are to enter is left in darkness and this makes me unable to "see" the other side of the door and therefore cannot get the open door pointer. I know it sounds really stupid but I just can't get it to work. I had a similar problem in the mind flayer area of the sewers, but there I managed after slot of work to somehow push one of my characters far enough into the wall that I could see the other side of the door and thereby open it. This time that does not seem to work  Any suggestions would be welcome.

hmmm. oups! I have just found out the reason why I can't open the door, there is no door! It just looks like there should be a door but there is none, stupid blind corridors. I just found another door I hadn't seen before, thereby giving me another way around. So this solved my door problem. Anyway thank you all for the insight and I shall try to refrain from getting myself in such positions again ;)

The left arena door which is not really there altough it looks like a door... well I guess many people tried to open that one and failed. I certainly did.

IMHO the Illithid area is the most interesting one of the three UD-dungeons, I still manage to die there repeatedly, thinking "Wow, let's clean those three dungeons for quick XP, who needs preparation anyway, I'll just stumble into it and whack them all this time". Like battling dragons, I usually end up prepared.

If you've installed ToB it's possible to highlight all doors, chests and loot by pressing TAB. Another good reason for getting ToB if you still needed it.

yeah, the Illithid lair was cool.....I got it all completely wrong of course: I should have gone into the Kua0Toa dungeon, sorted the pesky Demon nights out to get the G of FGS, which, with the Cloak of Mirroring, would have made the Beholder lair a breeze, enabling me to flit through the Illithid lair with a Green Stone Amulet.......however! Yep, you've guessed it I accidentally walked of the edge of the screen....'Evil, here I come' I was thinking. Evil? what are you doing? No! I don't wanna fight in your arena! No, you see I can't kill you when you control my fighters brains and then instakill them! Evil!?

mmmm oh yes i got slaughtered a coupla times......memories
