There are several strategies, for this. Just so you know, for the future: if you click on search, above, then enter "lich," you'll probably get hundreds of posts with useful advice--possibly over a thousand.
My own take is to use a character who has free action and a good, powerful weapon: Keldorn with Casomyr (it can dispel, after all) is the best for the job. Keep everybody else well back. Summoned creatures can also help, by deflecting the interest of the lich.

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

The easiest way is to enable cheats and use the Ctrl-Y button to kill anything. The easiest way without cheating is to buy a Protection from Undead scroll which will make the protected character invisible to the lich and immune to his more powerful magicks (Imprisonment, etc.). Unfortunately, there are only a handful of Protection scrolls and a few extra liches (plus Kangaxx and demi-lich).
I'd check out the Defeating Liches section of the BG2 Strategy Guides for some extra pointers.
I like to hide as far away from the beast for as long as possible and send in waves of summoned creatures (via Wand of Monster Summoning) to wear down the liches spell inventory. He'll use up all of his Death Spells, Horrid Wilting, Imprisonment, etc. on your cannon fodder. After he's out of spells, charge him with your heavy hitters (armed with +3 or better weapons, of course) and pound him with your archers. Eventually, you'll beat him into submission.

Jesus saves! And takes half damage!
If brute force doesn't work, you're not using enough.

there's a whole section on this website dedicated to strategies for killing liches.

my personal approach has always been to have some breach spells ready to fire at him once he has his protections up, then hack away. remember...he can't cast any nasty spells if he dies fast enough.
it is all very dependant on what your party consists of. mordenkain's swords are invaluable to me when facing them. their high magic resistance works wonders against them...except for death spell...
a berserker is great since when they are raging, they are immune to imprisonment.
a couple sunfires will lay waste to any undead enemy.
good luck...once you have a strategy it is a walk in the park

Thanks guys. I did not realize there was a strategy section for defeating liches.
I like strategy discussions any way though so...
This is my party atm
Cavalier (me)
Minsc
Jaheira
Aerie
Jan
Nalia
I don't really like this party very much. I am considering grabbing Keldorn instead of Jaheira or Nalia.
Any thoughts on the party I have?

Once your cavalier gets hold of a good two-hander (+3 or better), he can easily whack liches all by himself - just cast Protection from Undead on him beforehand. With the expansion, your cavalier will actually be able to blow up liches with his Turn Undead ability at higher levels.
There's nothing a little poison couldn't cure...
What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, ... to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if he people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security.

I think I would be inclined to ditch Nalia for Keldorn. You do not really need Nalia, given that Jan is a better thief, and that he and Aerie together will provide decent mage power.
Valygar might be worth considering as well.

i would recomend getting Keldorn instead of Jaheira. he is an awsome inquisitor and Jaheira is just so annoying. plus if you keep switching keldorns weapons from his magic sword to the crossbow of accuracy he can be very usefull in every situation.
also, i found Anomen to be much more usefull than jan. his mace of disruption is great and he is very good as a fighter/priest. his higher level spells are awsome.

Another viable way to kill Liches is to have character who can go beserk and have the others stay back. In Berserker mode, none of the imprisonment spells which make liches so deadly can touch the character so he can happily hack away. Just don´t use the "Protect from Undead" spell on the beserked character because the lich will look for other targets then. I killed Kangaxx that way : I dealt with his first form with a lot of traps and two summoned bears (these critters are deadly, especially against beholders and in close quarters) and when the demi-lich form appeared I had Korgan in beserker mode and wielding the improved mace of disruption, while all others stood back. Worked like a charm.
Another easy way is Daystar, but if the lich can have a saving throw, you´re in trouble.

Where are protection from undead scrolls?
Where are protection from magic scrolls?
I didn't find a single one.
Of course for me that meant that summoning things was essential.
Whenever I fought liches I used Keldorn's protection from evil on every one, and then summoned a pit fiend. Send him into combat first, and the lich will blow all his True Seeing, Time Stop, Symbol:stun, Symbol:fear, Symbol death combos on the demon, at worst this might leave Jaheira stunned or confused or something.
Once he has used time stop he won't use it again for a while, and you can whack him with Carsomyr and the Mace of Disruption.
ps where's the mace of disruption+2? I've heard people talking about it.
I thought Kangaxx was the easiest-his lich form is weak, and the little gap between him turning into a demi-lich was an ideal opportunity for me to slaughter him....of course I did play him at a very high level....for me the one in Ust Natha was the hardest.

I have found that high level clerics ( 15 or 16 +) with sanctuary cast on them are good against liches.
i clua-ed in a load of liches, they are just the normal 'run of the mill' liches, and Aerie and Agarrna ( my cleric/mage pc ) turned undead and within 5 seconds al the liches blew up.
This might not work work with the better liches (i.e kangaxx) but it at least it does something.

This may sound very silly for al lot of you, but i'm sure i don't know what a Lich is. Am i being impatient(i'm playing the game for the first time and am in the underdark), or did i allready encounter one and forgot that it was a Lich?
I've heard a lot about these monsters, so you can imagine that i want to know what you are talking about.
de ballen,
