@Ysh: I really think the classification is comfusing since class C for instance contains anti-depressants - most anti-depressant can't be neither abused nor overdosed, and they are not addictive. The report was also confusing, thanks for reading it

Yes, I think the global discussion and general softening of the attitude towards cannabis products is mostly because of the medical properties it has been demonstrated to hold.

Personally, I think this is good, and I also think it's good that expensive police resources can be freed for other issues than arresting people for possession of minor amounts of marijuana.

Switzerland has made it legal to smoke it but not to carry it.
Which makes no sense other than legal stuff.

Yes it does, and regardless of what their addictive properties may be, they are still legally prescribed - though it is questionable as to whether they need to be carried, it is not unreasonable that someone may be found to have them in their homes...

I agree on both accounts!

@Fas - hmmm...this is my feeling regarding the UK's softening it's approach...that to smoke is not as questionable as to carry - which may (depending on amount, and hence perhaps the reasoning for downgrading the drug) also indicate an intent to 'share' or distribute - which is highly illegal...

in the US marijuana is a class A drug. but all that means is that is a controlled substance, it's different than the UK. The federal government doesn't actually make the laws against drugs though, they just say if they are legal or not. the state is the one that actually decides the penalty. This information i got from some pretty doped up stoners who think they are playing the system, i'm sure someone can correct me if i'm wrong.

i agree with you guys, it's a good thing that they're lightening up on the marijuana charges. First of all, they don't really even enforce the laws they have, i know dozens and dozens of people who smoke and sell and grow and nobody does anything about it. It seems that cops really don't care. I think that if it's illegal they ought to actually do something about having it on the streets, or they could just make it legal and save everyone's time. And plus, it would be a good addition to the menue in coffee shops

Moderatly used, they way most people use it, alcohol and marijuana are about equally toxic, they have different mechanisms of action of course, but health risks are fairly equal. One difference is of course that alcohol is water soluable(sp?) so it disappears quickly from the body, whereas THC is fat soluable, and thus stays in the body for several weeks.

Cannabis and alcohol will both kill of your neurons (brain cells), and both the dose and the frequency is of importance here. Drinking a lot once at one occation will kill off more neurons than drinking moderatly more often, since a high blood plasma concentration of alcohol is more toxic than a low concentration more often. Ie one beer a day is better (for your brain cells, that is) than drinking yourself into a stupor once every second week.

I hope people who use marijuana are aware of that the lowering of cognitive function such as attention and memory, last for up to 48 hours. Thus, smoking pot and driving is equally dangerous as driving drunk, just a little reminder.

ABSOLUTELY correct.

The fact that I'm for the legalisation of cannabis (as an equal to alcohol) doesn't mean that I want ANYBODY to drive while under the influence of either...It's dangerous and simply DUMB !

- I just wanted to make that clear
