3e rules: favoured class?

Post by Disco Stew »

I'm not familiar with the 3e rules used in NWN, so bare with me. I don't understand the 'favoured class' concept :(

It seems to be a restriction for each race that handicaps xp for a character that doesn't use their favoured class. Multiclass makes everything really confusing though. It would really help if someone would explain this.

Thanks

When you multiclass in 3.ed you get an exp. penalty if there is more than 1 level difference between your classes, unless it is a favored multiclass.
Ei. a elfs favored multiclass is wizard (iirc) - that means if a elf multclasses to level 5 fighter and lvl. 2 rogue he will recive a penalty (How this is done and the amount I do not know), but if he is a lvl. 4 fighter and lvl. 3 rogue he does not
If it is a combination of a class and wizard (because it is his favored multiclass) he will not recive any pentalty, ei a lvl. 5 fighter/lvl. 2 wizard will not recive a penalty.

Sorry if this is a bit confusion - but I don't have "numbers" to back up this.
If somebody knows more - please post as it will be a factor in making your characther.

I have copied this from a D&D forum. I hope this helps.....

Hi all, quick question here. I have problems to understand how to gain XP while multiclassing. For exemple, if you are an elf fighter 6/cleric 2, you first have to count the XP penalty. What would it be in this case? Since figher nor cleric is the favoured class of an elf, and you take a -20% XP drop for every level (here 6-2 = 4 * 20 = 80%) is that it?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No, you take 20% for each non-favored class that is not within one level. In this case, one class is 4 levels from the other, so you have 20% penalty. In case of, say, elven Ftr6/Rgr4/Clr2, you'd have 2 classes too far away from another class level, and would have 40% penalty.

Now, I know 80% is probably wrong, but the second part of my question is this: If you have the character described above, and lets say you have a 20% XP penalty; when you gain XP, do you add this experience to the class you want? Can you put half into the cleric, and half into the fighter? If you decide to put it into your fighter class, I guess you don't lose any penalty?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You count the experience for an 8th level character. Once you gain enough experience (120% required or -20% income, depending on your DM) to reach level 9, you choose which class gains the level, or if you add yet another class. In case you added a level of ranger in this case, you would get 20% more penalty for a total of 40%, because 1st-level ranger would still be too far from the 6th-level fighter, even if it is only a level from 2nd-level cleric.

Good luck :)

thanks

I don't know where I got the idea a single class character being penalized for not using their race's favoured class.

I've been all over the place in anticipation for NWN. My only DnD experience has been with the baldur's gate series so 3e is still really confusing.

Anyways, thanks for clearing this up.
