Are you talking about the 'Tougher Mind Flayers'? If so, the only insta-kill ability they have is Emotion:Kill (save vs. spells no penalty or die). When it happens you should see floating text over the character ("I can't go on. I'ts hopeless. I must die" or something like that), then the character will fall down and then die.

Protections against it (other than good saves) are Brine Potions, the Greenstone Amulet and the Psions Blade.

Mindflayers....my fighters were creamed until i learned what potions of genius and mind focussing were....Dragons were also a pain in the rear without pre-preperation or cheese.

Alson, try this...this is best done with sorc...

when in the squid head rally, summon just 4 skellies, and haste and mass inv them...they will slaughter mindflayers, except the new improved sola ones, and you will not lose almost any of them for the length of the lair...

youre losing about half your force per room, right???

i have experimented extensively with summons, and hasted and mass inv skellies will murder them...if you want to use planetars, free action them and have them use globe of blades...free action planetars, due to psi blast...
They call me Darth...

I used a skelleton warriors against Irenicus and it worked pretty well. It burnt his spell triggers, most of his spells and managed to hurt him pretty severely.

Red dragons are almost easier with out a party. Protection from Magical Energy, or fire, makes you pretty much immune to their breath weapon. The wing buffet isn't so much of a pain when it's only one person and you stay far back.

Of all the creatures I probably hate those Mind Flayers the most. When I first fought them in the sewers I was soo badly beaten down. I was forced to dump the best equipment on my top fighter, and put all the defensive spells possible and then rush him with a few skeleton warriors and finish those worms off.

Also really hate clay golems, and the golems that haste themselves (clay golems IIRC).

The Underdark Mind Flayer was like hell. I kept on resting and summoning skeletons warriors and all the other monsters and throwing everything I got.

Actually in my experience they have a rather poor THACO. Tweak out 1 or 2 fighter types with all the AC you can give them (in the underdark it is easy to get -15 or better with a shield). They will hit you on critical only. They don't have that many hps or a great AC, so they wont stand up to your melee/missile attacks for long enough to score the multilple criticals they need to bring down your tanks. (obviously int potions will help the int-challenged).

imp mindflayers...really awful.
send melee fighter in...everythings as usual, doesnt get hit usually, free action, shield of harmony...
set up my ranged fighters behind, as far as possible. one of the mindflayers gets the idea to do that stupid ranged save-or-instakill ability...save fails...PC dead. DUH!

this ability is way too powerful imo, if they only used this they would win any battle.

Wraiths when you haven't played the game before are pretty scary. I couldn't afford to buy restoration and I didn't have a cleric who could cast it.

Is there any sure fire way to protect against charm? Other than the greenstone amulet.

There is a small shield you'll get after the Trademeet quest and a long sword during H'D's extraplanar prison quest that will grant you immunity. And several helmets of charm protection as well (at least one from the Sewer party and one from the Guarded Compound party).

As for protection against level draining, make sure to pay Gaelan ASOP and go meet Aran.

Thanks.

Do you know if there are any spells that produce similiar effects?

I'm going through this time with a Half-Orc berserker, and thus have five in Two-handed sword, so liliacor grants charm protection. But spells would allow me to not have to carry case specific stuff.

there is neg plane protection, cleric spell, but it doesnt last long. also there is lesser restoration (both lvl4), to cure the effects.

paying aran early gets u amulet of power and ring of prot+2, and there r not that many great amulets at that point anyway.
not anyone can wear it tho, does anyone know who can? clerics and rangers can, for sure. w/o some patch monks could, now my monk is wearing an amulet he may not use...

WOW chaotic commands is good. I always just sort of ignore my priest... maybe I should pay more attention.

Oh yeah... I just noticed that in one of the cages in the promenade are a moose and a squirrel. Hmm... Rockie and Bullwinkle?

hate mindflayers

They need all that preparation with protect from magic and invisible and haste and yet their psionic blast gets my best guys .. they aim magic at my mage altho she is standing still holding the staff of mage ... High level skeleton warriors that are resistant to magic and psionic blasts are the only things that sort of hold out.

But I do have to reload several times. Verrrrry painful.

You should bring haer'dalis next time you play through the mindflayer lair. I just played through with
me-- Blade
Anomen
Keldorn
Imoen
Mazzy
Valygar
I have just gained my first high-level ability and picked enhanced bard song(of course). It gives party members immunity to fear, confusion, stun and normal weapons aswell as giving a bonus of 4 to AC, thac0 and damage and 5% MR.
Fear stun and confusion immunity helps alot against mindflayers. Then it is just a question of equipping something that protects against charm and you are set.
I breezed through without taking any damage at all really.
Just take a look at Valygars stats and tell me bards dont rule.
( I used a couple of misleads and sang with the decoy aswell :D )

O-U-C-H-!-!
:D :D :D :D :D

It's hard being a Mind Flayer these days... :p :D
I cannot be caged.
I cannot be controlled.
(I probably cannot be contained either) :p ;)

Understand this as you die,
ever pathetic, ever fools.
