Be careful with traps. I think I remember that if you trap something to death you miss out on the experience points.

I could be wrong.
IIRC, killing things with traps still grants the Xp. Killing things whilst shape changed to a mindflayer doesn't though.

To have a real challenge you can do as I do...
Always go UNbuffed!!!
Ehehe...
While with my Kensai/Mage dragons remained perfectly doable
this way (contingencies, triggers...), when it comes down to
a "normal" party.... OUCH!!!!!
This worked: I had Viccy cast Harm while in combat, protected, Immie cast Lower Resistance and Viccy whack....
Then Magic Missile before the Dragon slaughtered them all..
Needed a few tries.

I have baldurdash and the AI improvements!! :)

Wow maybe I will try it with the new AI.

I agree about the prebuffing. I just keep stoneskin, contingencies, and sequencers. I also like the kensai/mage. My parties tend to be mage heavy. PC kensai/mage, Jan, Aerie, Tashia and to stand in the way of people Boo and Valygar. I depend on lower resistance, but I never thought of harm. I blast him with magic missles. The last time I fought him 45 into the air via 3 minor and 1 spell sequecher.

Anyway I got to try the new AI next time.

Thanks

Have your mage memorize several Lower Resistance and Breach Spells. Before the battle starts, buff your party with Fire Protection, Remove Fear, Chaotic Commands, and Chant. Your mages should have StoneSkin. When you approach Firkraag, spread your party out. Summon some monsters to help out, if you wish.

When the battle starts, have your mages immediately nail Firkraag with Breach, a couple of Lower Resistances, and Greater Malison, while your tanks hack at him. Have them back off and heal as necessary. Sometimes Firkraag will focus on one party member - you take advantage of this by running him around while the rest of the party pelts Firkraag with missile weapons and spells like Magic Missile, Spook, Acid Arrow, Lightning Bolt, etc.

Acutally, instead of using the Lower Resistance spells, just use Magic Resistance on him. This will overwrite his MR with the spells, effectively lowering his MR greatly.
But you'll have to check on this because I'm not sure how low the lower resistance spells take it.
Hope this helps!
