well it's hard to suggest when you don't tell us about you character, but here's what I think, if you're a mage type join House Telvanni, theif type join House Hlaalu, fighter type jion the house Redoran. Of course you can always join any number of guilds that exist in this game though some of them won't allow if you're already joined with their enemies.

Can you join House Telvanni and still remain a member of the Mage's Guild ? I'm not terribly far into the game, but the mages in the guild don't seem to care for the Telvanni very much...

I agree: as you can tell from one of your earliest quests, the Mage Guild hates House Telvanni, and the feelings are mutual. Telvanni in fact doesn't really get along with pretty much anybody else, so it's a great house if you prefer being self-reliant and screwing the rest of the world. ;)

Hlaatu is into money. Redoran is big on honor. All three have their advantages, and I will eventually have characters who join 'em all. :)

That's a good idea, Fable :)

I think this time through, I'm going to limit myself to playing conservative. Maybe I'll snub my nose at the guilds (and their quests) with my next character in order to be a House Telvanni 'operative' ;) .

I joined House Telvanni and am in the mage guild, it has worked out fine so far, the quests have not come into conflict. (I agree they don't like each other, but it seems like a natural path if your character is a mage to be involved in both.)
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....

@Jaker, they probably will come into conflict. Have you done the one (not to give too much away) about tendering the offer to the former Telvanni member? As I recall, the disposition of one Telvanni quest giver declined low enough after I did this Mage Guild quest for her to attack me on sight.
