Well ok, cigarettes are more antisocial But it is blatently more antisocial than drinking since you are the only person who imbibes alcohol but if you're smoking everyone else has to breathe your fumes

It must be the early start. Hugs are good for you, everyone knows that. I'd stop after one a day if I got one back, you know.

Actually they don't, I always breathe the smoke out a window into the open, so no-one else has to partake of my second-hand psychotropic smoke, except for compression sessions in which that's the whole point.

... BTW, both my parents smoke cigarettes and I hate them (the cigarettes, not my parents

). Because of it, I've been a passive smoker with twice the intake for years now, without lighting a cigarette myself.

Actually @Brink, independent studies have proven that marijuana is less harmful physically than cigarettes and less harmful physically and mentally than alcohol, that unlike cigarettes or alcohol it is impossible to get physically addicted to marijuana (the only possible addiction is psychological), and have failed to show any harmful effects when used in moderation over a sustained period of time, in opposition to most legal drugs, including caffeine.
In contrast there have been two studies that have contradicted these results, one claimed smoking marijuana causes brain damage after several chimpanzees found to have suffered minor brain damage after being forced to inhale copious amounts of cannabis smoke without being allowed to breathe normally in between 'tokes' (and oxygen starvation is a widely known cause of brain damage); the other found that 8 out of 10 test subjects who were marijuana smokers had various forms of mental problems. What it didn't mention was that all 10 'subjects' had been culled from a mental asylum, and most had a history of heavy solvent, alcohol, narcotic and barbituate abuse in addition to smoking marijuana.

@Eerhardt-my grandfather died of lung cancer after being a lifelong cigarette smoker. Since then cigarettes haven't really done anything for me.

I just can't see the point in cigarettes, I mean they don't even get you high!

No worries, very few people do. Most just accept the 'official' line, and don't bother learning the facts for themselves, understandable considering how hard it is to find an unbiased opinion on the matter.

EDIT-Not that I'm unbiased, mind you, I've just done my research on the topic and found that it furthers my own opinion.

@Ode-It is quite impossible to find an unbiased view when it comes to issues like this.Of course, what lead to my ignorance of that fact was that I've never liked smoking(and also because of an advert I saw on the telly when I was young which had a very strong impact on my opinion of drug-taking for kicks, I'm afraid)

No-one in his right mind can hypnotize a SLURR - Ok, that didn't narrow the threat in SYM down one bit *sigh*

True, everyone has an opinion on the issue. I used to be heavily anti-all drugs too, but once I tried it for myself (really just to see for myself what it was like) I found, to my great surprise, that it wasn't the "Take-it-and-you-will-become-a-drug-addict" scourge I'd been led to believe but just a harmless way of relaxing, no worse than the perfectly legal alcohol (and arguably better, as unlike getting drunk you don't get violent or depressed). I'm still very much opposed to 'hard' drugs, and anything which you can OD on is to be avoided IMHO, but cannabis is fine by me.

The basic philosohpy I have is that if you enjoy it, then by all means use it. If not then don't, why do something for recreation when you don't like it? But try it once before you make up your mind, if only so you can make an informed choice.

EDIT-Like Beldin says, if you want to debate the topic I'm fine with that, given that we all come from an informed viewpoint and can back up our opinions with factual evidence in a nice, reasonable way.
