World Cup 2002
*sigh* It's sad to see a great game like this one is once again decided on a penalty .Credit goes to both the Argentinians for their attacking play(brilliant, if unlucky ) and the English defence for not losing their concentration in the second half (although their style of playing very closely resembled Liverpool's brand of football ie: 11 men in their own half )

It has been a year of breaking records for England...we had never beat Germany away then hammer them 5-1 D ) we haven't beat Argentina since 1966, then beat them in a great match 1-0. Fantastic! It was so good to see them play and play for a full 90 minutes! not like the half hour performance against Sweden What a game!! and sooo tense in the last ten minutes!

@Yshania-Yeap,Owen was unlucky to have hit the sidepost.but towards the end, the Argentinians were the only ones attacking(Seaman's presence between the sticks was outstanding )
Having said that, I can't imagine what will happen when the Argentinians face the Swedes next

That is what i heard on the radio (no matter how biased they were ) apparently for all Argentina's nice play England had more on goal chances.Originally posted by Yshania
Sad in a way, I agree, but we had so many close goals. We could have had more
I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.
@Mr. Sleep-The English had more attempts on goal because they played with 11 men in their own half when the Argentinians were attacking(which was almost all the time in the second half, although their shots were mostly from a distance, hence the lack of shots on target), as I've pointed out earlier

So let me see - you go to a conference on behavioural genetics and I spring to mind .Originally posted by C Elegans
Nice to see you Tom, I thought of you recently when I was at a multidisciplinary conference about behavioural genetics, where not only we life scientists were represented, but also philosophers, sociologists and antropologists. Part of the conference was devouted to ethics and moral issues, a very important area of today's medical research [/size]
Well I can tell you already that genetic therapy will do as little as the other therapies.
So go on give me a bit of that modified retro virus... The brain of mother Terresa is no match against >this< mind.

Just a quick post, I'm still at work and my supervisor doesn't seem to be the least interested in football...
Congratulations to England, I'm going to watch the resending tonight just to experience the pleasure of England beating Argentina. Sorry all Argentinias fans, I personally dislike some aspects of Argentinian football.
Since my favorite team Nigeria lost against Sweden today, they are now out of the tournament Better luck next time to Nigeria, and I will have to decide which team to cheer on from now on. Perhaps England? They would certainly deserve to win a WC.

How exactly Victoria Beckham connects to football is known by no one, yet somehow she would undoubtedly be roped into the ensuing back pattingOriginally posted by Tom

Somehow, I get the feeling that even if England wins the WC, the English press will probably only be harping about how great the team is for two years(European Championships, anyone? )

@Sleep & Tom: OK, maybe I'll cheer for Senegal instead then What is a SPEW? And what has mrs Beckhams with anything to do? Is she also a football player? I thought she was an ex-Spice girl. Maybe she plays football better than she sang? Let's hope so.
@Tom: But ECT do change people's behaviour, so that's no incorrect prediction. In the acute phase, people get amnesia and confusion...and with prolonged, repeated treatment, chronic amnesia, learning disabilites and personality changes are common.
For more modern approaches to change a person, there are many interesting intracellular processes that can be targeted...

Why only two years? Seaman aside, the average age of the squad is 24 - a bit of leg left in them yet our problem is not having a clue about a regular team, only a regular few players, injuries allowingOriginally posted by Brink

@CE - spewing is the forced emptying of your stomach contents Cheer for Senegal - I think they are doing great!! They might play naiive football, but are they fast or what?? and what better to challenge a seasoned player than a bit of what they do not expect?

@Ysh: LMAO That kind of spewing, just because Tom wrote it with capital letters, I thought it was acronym for something Oh my, am I medical and computer terms-indoctrinated
I thought England played excellent football today, not as entertaining as the African teams perhaps but certainly not boring either. Offensive, fast and several good chances. I like the English team

@Robnark: Seriously though, how important do you think Sven-Erik Göransson is for England's team? I know virtually nothing about him since he's been Lazio's coach for many years and I don't follow Italian club football.

I thought they looked great today Each gave 100% and for 90 minutes. Nice to see. I am critical when necessary, yet I felt we deserved a result today. Against Sweden, we had an outstanding first half hour then crumbled...taking nothing away from Sweden, they did what the Argentinians couldn't. I know that a penalty is a sad way to decide a game, but I honestly feel we had so many chances today, that the game was ours - even despite the frantic last ten minutes. We held onto it. Against Sweden, we lost it, and I was thankful for the full time whistle. This is the fun of a cup competition - it is a sprint, not a marathon. You hit it on the day or you run to catch up

he's done very well indeed, as far as i can tell. it was an exceptional achievement to get Enland into a qualifying position - i believe they were bottom when he took over - and with a team that no-one rated highly at all, we're looking pretty good for going through at the moment. i'm quite impressed by him, and the way he's been quietly optimistic through the thick and the thin, never overhyping the team, but never coming away sounding negative. he's good at his job
