choosing a PC
I may be acquiring NWN sometime soon. After browsing occasionally through this forum I am getting the sense that the thief henchmen are somewhat lacking, so I am thinking, at least for my initial run through the game, that I might create some type of fighter/thief character. I tend to find this type of class fun anyway.
I would be curious, though, to hear about people's experiences with the various classes they have chosen because I know that they all offer their individual enjoyments or advanatges.

hmmm
well i've played almost every class there is out there. (except monk....i can't get over the fact idea of not wearing armour, and fighting bare handed hehe..........and no kamas dont count lol) anyway to be honest, the most fun i've had is with a character who has a hard time getting through the game. Sure i've played with the burly fighter with way too much strength for his own good (28 is a bit excessive dont u think?) and quite frankly i was bored of killing guys in 1 hit. If you want to truly appreciate the game, play with something like a druid, or maybe a ranger/thief multiclass. I think the variety of items/spells/abilities you get from these two are enough to satisfy even the most bullheaded gamer. (hey it got me hooked didn't it) anyway experiment with different things. Play the Prelude with a couple of premade characters and see what you like best. After all making a character who you can *Roleplay* and *enjoy*, is far more valuable than one who can beat the game in record time.
my 2 cents

Of course I had to try the druid I like the animal companion I am still in Chapter 1, with a level 3 character, and this is my first time through. I have had to take Tomi Undergallows to make up for my lack of thief skills - but he hasn't really let me down so far, except to deny one trap.
I need to take a look at how my son is doing - he is further in the game than I am and got bored with his half-orc Barbarian we had created for him and decided to dual class his character to a wizard! strange combination, but he seems to be getting on fine

hmm
ya i was in a similar situation. Not being a thief, and not having high enough Str to bash open chests, i was *forced* to take either Tomi, or Daelen.........Not having any druid spells which will open locked doors kind of limits your henchman options. ( i really had my heart set on Grimnaw......lol.....a dwarven monk? come on now ) Anyway i've always been partial to linu (her stories are hilarious) so for the first chapter i had to do without her because of my lack of skill Oh well, another minor gripe with NWN

The bard henchperson has been able to open most locked doors and chests for my Druid. And I just tank through most traps (saving first, of course ), though I did take a couple skills points in disarm traps, which lets me at least mark the traps and sometimes disarm them.
That there; exactly the kinda diversion we coulda used.
My paladin (lvl 5) is playing very well with Tomi (Rogue henchman) as a sidekick. He has only let me down once or twice not finding traps before I sprung them and only once could he not disarm a trap. Otherwise he has been good as another sword, better than Sharwyn who I played for a bit.

I also put a couple of points into detect/disarm traps...my druid detects them quite easily but cannot disarm them yet btw - anyone know whether an NPC rogue will automatically try to disarm a trap if you fail? I thought they automatically tried, but Tomi hasn't on one occasion, and I heard him on another say 'there is no way' just as the trap lit up...Originally posted by Gwalchmai

"there is no way"
when Tomi says "theres no way" that just means he has no possible chance to disarm the trap at his current skill level. Also he should automatically try to disarm if you fail, though the game *is* notoriously glitchy. (i've had to L-click on a chest 4-5 times before he'd actualy start lockpicking)

Thank you again Mortician It is that I realised very early on that the only way I can have him even consider using his thief skills is to attempt the task first. This appears to work fine with lockpick, but he has yet to disarm a trap, and only once commented that he was unable.

As has been noted before, the trapped floors aren't really that bad when you encounter 'em, and most henchmen can open chests. Hell, even the cleric who has a problem with hitting anything manages that.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
I'm playing a wizard right now, and have no problem with traps. I detect them right away, and have my panther familiar bash/run over them to disarm. This is a real nice way, i think.
But you were originally asking what class we liked. I think the wizard is the most enjoyable class to play.
a) He has a better variety of spells than the sorceror,
b) TONS OF SPELLS! With all of the different spells, you can't get bored IMO.
c) Really cool spell effects.
d) Can also turn into a fighter type character with tenser's transformation.
e) Has spell "Knock" to unlock things.
f) You can summon a familiar and other cool beasts.

I am in my first run through the game and have tried a number of PC combinations. Since I prefer a multiclass character, I have mostly looked at combinations that use similiar ability scores such as druid/cleric, paladin/sorc, ranger/rogue, etc. I found that I really enjoyed having an animal companion and since I like to melee, a wizard or sorc multi doesn't work well for me. I didn't want to wait until level 6 to get the animal companion, so that left some sort of druid multi.
Rather than looking completely at power-gaming, I decided to do more roleplaying in this game compared to what I did in BG. In the end, I was intrigued by the roleplaying possibilities of being a rogue-spy type character, so I started my character out as a rogue to get the increased skills, then added druid and cleric. From a roleplaying perspective, I just envisioned a character that wanted as many "covers" as possible, as well as their attendant abilities, and this has worked well. I chose a panther as an animal companion based on personal preference and have really been enjoying the game so far. I would encourage you to not only consider creating a skillful or powerful character, but one that you would find personally interesting as well.

Those who will play with kitties must expect to be scratched.

Thanks I have been thinking along those lines.

I'd like to recommend the Ranger/Rogue. I think it's a interesting multi who also makes perfect sense, and I just love dualwielding two light Rapiers, using my (great) Dexterity instead of my (lower) Strength. To have an Animal Companion is fun as well - I now have a Bear named Paw fighting at my side (I play a lot with him as well ).
