Traps Rant

Post by Magus »

I don't know about you guys, but I'm very tired of getting burned, zapped, frozen, and dissolved by traps that shouldn't even be there! I'm in a hill giant's lair for heaven's sake! Where in the Hells did they get all these sophisticated magical boobytraps?!

Uhm, I guess they've captured the former owners of the traps and forced them to trap their lair before eating them. ;)

Sometimes there are traps in places where they don't really belong but in general wizard homes are heavier trapped than animal caves. I for myself am glad about every trap I find because I collect them. :D

Hmmm...

So maybe the owner of the acid traps was incompetent, or more likely, slightly pyschotic, and made traps that couldn't be safely tripped? Or really competent and determined to somehow get back at the giants, not thinking that an intrepid monkish adventurer would get the brunt of his hellish inventions?

It would explain much....

@Nygma: Oh, btw, I discovered that my fighter/rogue also cannot avoid acid traps, even though he has evasion and succeeds his saving throw. So it's not just monks. I got hit for 40-50 damage several times when I shouldn't have, which gets very irritating when you're trying to stay at full health.

Thats because some traps roll to hit you, sometimes you don't get a reflex save and thus Evasion has no effect. They basically make an attack vs your AC. Of course thats usually only traps that have to hit you, such as spike traps and the like.

I personally don't worry about this.

1. I have Tomi, and I'm a Paladin. He fights with ranged weapon normally, and his Sneak Attack + Crits do a ton of damage.

2. Tomi disarms just about everything.

3. The chests that Tomi can't disarm, I trip while protected with Resist Elements. I make sure Tomi is plenty far away for my bomb disposal efforts.

Using Resist Elements (a 2nd level Paladin spell), I've reduced trap damages (tested this once or twice) from 102 to 14 hp. This is variable, of course, but it just demonstrates how effective the spell can be.

4. I use regenerative items (Lantanese Ring +3) to recover my hit points. Not that I need it; since about mid-Ch. 2, I've been hard pressed to find a decent fight or anything that posed a challenge. When I met Brother Toras, I just happened to have a lt. flail that was +4 vs. undead (don't know why I hung on to it, but I'm glad I did) and walloped the hell out of him (literally) within about 20 seconds..........

@Skilless: I don't know about you, but getting surrounded by 4-5 hill giants is a death sentence for me at this point (lvl. 14/3 fighter/rogue). Of course, the logical counterpoint would be to not get surrounded. That's good and fine, and I try my best not to, but sometimes it happens whether I want to or not. BTW, I'm going solo, so I don't have Tomi to disarm everything for me. I can disarm the easier traps, but they're not worth disarming anyway. I could just fire arrow all the trapped chest, but that gets old real fast...

But you're right about the bosses in Ch. 2-3. They tend to be easier than many of the random spawing fights.

@Mathurin: That's possible, but I've never seen an attack roll, at least for acid traps. And I've got pretty high AC (31 for now, soon to be higher).
