Yes, there are forum members I have heard a lot about that I want to eventually meet and have conversations with, like Vehemence, Waverly, to name a couple.
You are extremly polite and nice, so if somebody has been offended by you it must be a mistake! I hope you feel relaxed enought not to think about fitting in any longer - and never fear to voice your opinions, as long as you do it in a way that is not insulting to others. :)

That makes me feel really good to hear this. Thank you. :)
@Dottowsky: I must be totally brain dead today...I don't remember any on the events you referr to, but I understand your point. If might be difficult for new member and for AR himself to see the difference, but if you know HLD:s normal posting style it must have been very obvious he was joking.

Yes. I was thinking that. I was thinking, are you sure this was HLD that posted this? From what I know about him, it doesnt sound like he would try to do such things seriously.

Hello T', how are you doing? :) Tybaltus is very lucky tonight, two Mods turning up to help out :)

That's probably very wise - I didn't do that either
One of the first controversies I was involved in, was some guy (White rabbit? I think that was his username) posting something about the mods being nazi's, and Flagg of course objected to that, but the guy insisted it was obvious that "nazis" was just an expression, not referrring to actual nazis. At that point I posted some examples of sentences within quotation marks and explained very clearly to they guy why I thought he was wrong and why I didn't think it was acceptable to use the word "nazi" as a general invective, and then Fouldwimmerlaik (AKA Witchking) turned up and called me a hypocrite and worse than the first guy.

If I had read more before starting to post at SYM, I might have understood that this was probably a joke, but since I didn't know anything about Foul, I just considered him an idiot.

That's the route I took. Some things you can get away with saying in a joking way after you get to know people. Then they understand that

A. your just teasing
B. Your insane and should be ignored
C. Both A and B

:D

Just thought I would step outside a bar thread, I have heard there is life out here, and wanted to see for myself. ;)

To me too :D I can hardly imagine it :D

I dont think it would have been impossible for me to get banned at the begining. I did start to check out SYM around the 9/11 event and had rather extreme opinions on the matter according to some standards. I think it would've been rather easy for me to step out of line more than i should if things have been abit different.
It was highly infected here as elsewhere IRL just after the WTC attack. The Mods had a really sweaty time. People posted anti-muslim and anti-Arab statements. People (like me and others) who didn't agree with everything the US and Bush said, where called "US bashers" by some overheated members, and accused for the strangest things. Still, I think it was much better here than most places - RL included.

EDIT: Bye Dottolix, you are late for work again :D

Later Dottie. :)

Yes, I was quite quiet here the first 4 days I was on SYM (A miracle, eh? Me, quiet on SYM :D ). I basically decided to learn a lot about each person here by posting an opinion thread right off the bat and responding immediately to opinion threads.

I first appeared at SYM with a thread something like "Worst Album Ever" and was immediately welcomed by 2 people, BS and Tam. That was good. I felt I was treading on friendly ground.
Then I progressed to make the "Worst TV Ever" Thread where I learned the opinions of others. I learned the joking/teasing part of SYM through the DF Tavern and CE's couch. And since then Ive been trying to fit in, and I hope I fit in. I feel I do. :)

Hello T, hows it feel to be the one startled for a change? ;)

I don't think it worked though, seems this thread qualifies as a bar  :D

@Tyb: Waverly is a great person IMO, and he is also one of the SYMers I feel I have most in common with. Like several other people here who I've had extensive discussions with, I am sure we would be good friends if we met.

I think you fit in very well in this crowd, you can discuss many things and you are nice and funny. That's about what is needed :D

This also seems true of much of Western and Northern Europe, from what I've heard. I think the culture of plenty in the US has kept people here from realizing just how fragile natural resources are.
So let us hope this has some effect on the not neglible amount of Americans who believe the human intereference has nothing to do with the climate changes, and that the greenhouse effect is some kind of "leftist conspiracy"....

Later, @Dottie. :)

There are always conditions, stated or implied, attached to rules. I'm reminded of an old (I mean, old--older than me!) Russian story about a village idiot who observes a wealthy merchant enter the display room of a glass factory. While there, the merchant knocks over a vase which breaks. The owner tells him, 'Bah, don't worry! Here, have one free!" and gives the man an identical vase. The merchant then places an order, and leaves.

At that, the idiot enters the display room, and deliberately knocks over an expensive vase. The owner gets angry, and calls in workers to grab him and go for the authorities. "But you let that merchant have a vase free!" the hapless fool protested.

"Yes," replied the owner, "but he regularly buys hundreds of vases from me, while you, you're just an idiot."

Most of us are a bit better at social observation than the idiot, but it really does help to know what's going on.

That's pretty much what we kept me here, and I'm not the sort of person to do a lot of posting. I've been to other forums where the people were very anti-social; either you agreed with all their ideas about everything under the sun, or they'd flame you. That type of board is unfortunately pretty common, as many of the game developers' websites show. A forum which doesn't permit that sort of thing and encourages open dialog is pretty rare, and you can tell very soon how most visitors will fit in.

Fable speaks the truth... I've been on several other servers and in some cases, I didn't even bother to register when I saw just a few of other member's posts. We're lucky that we have free Forums over here at GameBanshee where people can do exactly what this forum means: Speak Thier Minds. That's why I love GB so much: even the mods are cool, which, I have *yet* to find in any other forum. :D

@Fable: Nice story :) and very telling.

@Tyb: Like Fable, the things you mention are why I have stayed here too...and don't believe Fable when he says he is not the kind of person who do a lot of posting - just check his number of posts! :D

Actually, the mods don't seem to mind me that much. Except for T, I rarely take a beating, but that is all right ;)

@CE, still, for some reason Fable doesn't seem to post all that much. Maybe it's because he posts a lot in debates and such. Maybe I am just losing my mind  :D
