Hopelessly clueless... help me please.

Post by Holly »

Okay, so I just started the game, and I'm at the goblin fight at the Palisade. I'm pretty clueless in terms of rpgs and the abilities of my characters. I can't seem to pass it without any of them dying...
I've got a Paladin, a Rogue, a Barbarian, a Cleric, a Ranger, and a Wizard.
Can anyone give me any tips on #1 How to stay alive and #2 What the best way is to revive fallen characters?

Thanks

Don't revive fallen characters, at that point. Restart. Make sure you enter the zone with everybody well rested, and your spellcasters in possession of their full powers.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

I agree with Fable for the most part, but there was a section of the game (I think the first battle with the orcs once you leave the palisade) that my paladin died in every time. Resurrection in IWD2 is really cheap compared to other IE games I have played. It only cost me 200 or 400 gold, which seems like a lot at the begining, but gold is easy enough to come by. Anyway, go to the big circular building in the town section of Targos. Talk to the cleric in there and he can raise your characters. Despite what the spell description sells, his raise dead (the spell that must normaly be cast at the characters area of death) should work no matter where your char died (at least it still worked in my game). I am pretty sure raise dead is about half the price of the full blown ressurection.

Staying Alive (also known as The Art of Dodging Death's Dreary Dungeon).

Playing a 4-member party: Fighter, Thief, Cleric & Sorceror.

1.) Make sure you tank with your tank. Sounds simple - it isn't. I found that it takes some getting used to as monsters don't always target the guy up front.
If a baddie is beating on your bruised bystanding bard, get the char to run around and hit the creature with your tank char - that usually gets them to switch targets.
I cannot tell you how many times I thought a battle was going well only to notice the baddie wasn't attacking Juice-monkey Oz the human steriod, they were swiping at my sorceror. A couple good hits and before I could move him, BLAM - dead. Reload.
Tank with your tank
p.s. Clerics make decent damage sponges, screw the AI, you'll do better.

2.) Your thief (with 1 level of ranger) is as badassed as your fighter when it comes to dishing damage. Don't leave him sulking in the corner, get out there and throw the smack (or a reasonable facsimile) down.

3.) Spell-whipers own. Period. With inproved inviso on, my sorc easily drops entire rooms of baddies, taking little or no damage.

4.) Tactics - Don't fight monsters on their terms. Nah - Scout the area and find a defenseable position...
...In the goblin tunnels @ the beginning of the game (under the warehouse. Now, the average party might just run headlong into the final battle.
Instead, find a length of tunnel that narrows, stick your tanks just before the narrow spot so that fewest enemies are attacking at any given time. Use your thief or other fleetfooted char to lure the enemies into yer trap.

Luring into a set trap gets me through a lot of the game - especially the final few horde battles - storming the stronghold and killing off Guthma (sp?) This tactic was also key in Sherigal (sp?) final battle.

5.) Spell buffs-stoneskin everyone when you get it, inviso, bull strength, do it all up. Stoneskin (by far) has marked a noticeable improvement in combat outcome.

6.) If you're not a tank, you'd best be a whipper - arrows, spells, whatever.

7.) If your cleric doesn't have Heal, leave 'em as a damage sponge or damage-dealer - use a potion, it's much faster.

8.) Heart of Fury is more fun than anyone should be allowed to have.

9.) (Just my opinion, has nothing to do with roleplaying the party) If you want your paladin to dish damage, make him a fighter. If you want your paladin to heal people, make him a cleric. If you want him to do both, keep him a paladin...but if you want your paladin to do both well, multiclass a fighter/cleric.

10.) Leave your ranger in the woods.

11.) Did I mention your sorceror is a freaken' cannon?

Hope this helps, later
