Thief/.....?!!?!?

Post by Nero »

I have a little problem. I will create a new character and start a new game and have decided i wanna be a thief although I do not believe in a normal thief so.... What should I play as? Should I be a human dualclassing to something or should I be a multiclass or a thief kit...?????? I really REALLY would Like to hear your opinion of what is fun and exciting. So If you wanna help one in need you just have to write down a little something.

Thx

I've just finished a run through with a multi fighter/thief and it was great fun. The use any item ability virtually changed her into a F/M/T...plus F/Ts can also (for some reason) gain loads of assassination HLAs.

are you going to be soloing or with a party? if you're gonna be in a party with a bunch of fighters then i'd go for a theif/mage which is loads of fun. if you're gonna be in a party with mages be a theif/fighter and be the tank of the group. if you are soloing f/m/t works well but i'd probly still go with just the t/f and use any item.

whenever i play theif i go with elf for the dexterity point. also, i prefer multi classing to dual classing so this works for me.

If you're going for a multi, each of the races gets a different set of bonuses. Dwarves, gnomes and halflings all get +40 points, elves only 15 points. But if you can get an elf with 19dex, this gives approx another 30 points which gives them the edge. I think.

But that's purely powergaming...role playing wise, go with what ever you want to.

Dual thieves offer impresive combinations...berserker/wizard slayer/kensai dualed to a thief, swashbuckler/ assassin dualed to a thief (I'm going to try an assassin/mage soon). That's the trouble with this game, there's so many interesting variations to try out...

I've just remembered that halflings can get a natural 19 dex, so that would give them the edge in theving skills...+70 points.

The best, from a power gaming perspective, is probably a Fighter (probably berzerker though Kensai has some intriguing possibilities) dualed to Thief. This gives you a big bonus over straight thieves in THACO and Hit Points, but yet you will still be able to attain the same levels as a typical straight thief.

The only disadvantage is, of course, you cant use any of the thief kits (which I think are all around the best out of all the classes kits. None of the thief kits are worthless and I agonize over which to pick every time)

Multi-Class figher/thief is also effective, and the class im playing in my game right now, but isnt as powerful as fighter dualed to thief in my opinion. The advantage of a fighter/thief though is the figher HLA.

Im not a huge fan of thief/mage simply because, for me, it seems to limit the mage aspect (due to a lower level, less access to high level spells) and the thief aspect (thaco and hit points arent good) Besides you have Jan. Thief dualed to mage is pretty good, but you have Imoen and Nalia if you want to go that route.

My advice would be mc halfling f/t.

Halflings are the best thieves in the game due to their racial modifiers and f/t simply rocks. Thief characters are probably the ones you use most in the game, especially in non-combat situations, so they're a good choice for a player character. Besides that, fighter/thieves are probably the most powerful non-magic combatants in the game.

Well, my favorite thief options are:

1) Swashbuckler - Dual if you wish (swash/fighter or swash/mage are great), although I had plenty of fun playing a pure one.

2) Assassin-13/Fighter - My favorite class ever! 5x backstab, poison, put 100% in dispel illusions, dual-wielding, weapon specialization and mastery, can actually hit stuff unlike a pure assassin thanks to fighter Thac0, at high levels Power Attack, Critical Strike, and especially Smite combined w/ a poisoned backstab is beautiful, as is a poisoned GWW.

If you must be a thief be an Illusionist/Thief. Good at magery and thievery. But why don't you just play something there isn't one of in the game already and grab Jan Jansen(my favorite NPC of all time).

To Skuld. Simply Cause I'm so bored with Jan and I need a party without him and then you have to have a thief and Imoen you first get in chapter 6 and Nalia isnt going to last. And Imoen neither when you get to ToB. There you'll need a better thief than her and If not Jan then who??!? Thats why that I would be very pleased if somebody told me where I could find some good NPC's who are thiefs.... Or Just NPC in general

Why the hell would you do that if you can get a great assassin/fighter dual without any cheating whatsoever?

You would do that if you wanted to be a gnome, also I personally like multiclass better than dualclass, if you felt the same way you would use SK.

Just make your PC a Half-Orc Swashbuckler next time for the sheer novelty value of it.
