Obi-Wan

Post by frogus »

I would just like to tell everyone that this game for the X-Box is the most genius work of computergaming perfection ever created. It is the best game in the whole world. It is better than Baldur's Gate....

The incredible revolution in the game is controlling your light-saber with a joystick rather than buttons, which makes it incredibly smooth and realistic sword fighting, rather than clunky symbol punching.

If I cannot persuade you to go and buy an X Box (just to play this game) with the promise of actually feeling like you're having a light-saber fight, then what about these:

- You can Force-push your opponents through the air.
- You can Force-levitate and throw giant objects at your opponents.
- You can slow down time, in order to do ultra slick moves in slow motion....
- You can throw your light-saber at your opponent like a frisbee and have it return to your hand.
- You can whip your light-saber out and put it away with realistic noises and incredibly cool light-trails in the air.
- You can deflect bullets back at their firers with your lightsaber...

So on single player, it is perfectly possible to reenact the destroyer droid (IIRC) scene from Phantom Menace...
You (and Qui-Gon Jinn (sp?)) come out a door, to be faced by a swarm of destroyer droids...They open fire, but you deflect their energy beams with your light saber destroying two of them...You then throw your light saber at the pack, killing a third, and switch to slow motion as you soar through the air above their heads, catching your light saber in mid-air before landing behind them as time suddenly bursts back into normal speed. You cartwheel sideways to avoid them as they turn around, and then decapitate them both with a spinning light saber sweep through the air...

In two player I played a couple of games in which there were rules stipulations of No Force Moves (except jump). Both players run towards each other across the arena, Force-jump high into the air, switch on slow motion, and battle it out in slow speed hand to hand combat as they fall to the floor. Whoever is dead when they hit the floor loses.

What can I say? It is the coolest game in the whole world  .

Just thought I'd share that with you and tell you to all go out and play it now!

Might be fun, might be cool, might even be revolutionary. But nothing beats Baldurs Gate 1&2. Nothing

personally i was wondering if he had actually played Obi-wan

As it is on the x-box i am already predisposed to hate it, and for the few moments i have played it i could find no redeeming qualities in it, opinions differ and thats fine but I believe Jedi Knight 2 is by far the superior game, and that the sooner the x-box dies the safer console gaming will be as we will not have to see the dribble of poor or mediocre games that come out for the x-box as IMo none of them are worth playing not even halo which was boring after about 5 mins.

buy a PS2 and get devil may cry now that is a game worth playing.

Oh, and while you're at it, you can get Halo for that shiny new X-box as well, which is without a doubt the best console FPS ever made, especially with 4 people and a lot of beer... :D

 Whoah...seems like you're the one who hasn't actually played the games enough to be talking about them...you can't really talk about the quality of games if you're already pre-disposed to hate them, only play them for a few moments or discover they bore you after 5 minutes and stop playing. Once you actually master the controls of the games, you will find that they are the most intuitive things in the world, (bar perhaps mouse and keyboard ;) ) and I'm sorry, but the X-Box does smack pretty much all the other consoles out into the bleachers, no matter how you look at it.

No no no no true FPS has ever been good on a console it along with RTS are games for which you need a mouse. Others cannot compare to the power of a PC, the only near decent one is Goldeneye for the N64 which was ok yet the aiming was very clunky.

PC's allow you to react faster and with greater accuracy than any console ever could.

First of all - is that a quadruple negative, implying that all FPSs on consoles are good? :p

I hate Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark. The aiming/looking/moving system is horrible, about as non-intuitive as you can get. Halo on the other hand, if you get the settings right (increasing the vertical sensitivity on the looking helps a lot), is exactly like using a mouse and keyboard, except your WSAD and mouse are both replaced with joysticks. The WSAD part is easy to pick up, and if you've ever played a flight sim, the "Inverted" control system for Halo is second nature too. What's the problem?

It is not a quadruple negative merely my expressino of disbelief that i have found one person who enjoys FPS on a console

This may well be merely aesthetic but I do not like using joysticks for anything other than flight sims and i much prefer to use the mouse over this. The problem is the inverted control I never understood why games have inverted axis to me it has always been a hindrance never a help and has always detracted from gameplay because i have always used a mouse to aim when i move the mouse up i expect the reticule to go up as well not the other way round.

I will admit i am biased towards the x-box but i believe the general consensus is that most of the games available are not that good, also the sales for the x-box have been appaling (at least in england) because after about a month being on sale the x-box dropped £100 (a third of its original price).

On the topic of halo I played it for about an entire afternoon but i was bored after about 5 mins.

In regards to Goldeneye the movement system is fine but i do agree that the aiming and looking is appaling,

Hey, I'm just joking around ;) But I think you'll find that there's quite a lot more than one person...

Well, you can have it either way, you know...it's just that I think many people would find using the joystick the same as in a flight sim more intuitive...you can tailor it to your wishes.

Indeed, but those who bought the X-Box in that month, could get a rebate of two free controllers and two free games, about £120 in worth. What a deal... :D

OK, not every game suits everybody, but it does baffle me that you could find Halo boring. 4-player multiplayer, running around a valley with tanks and rocket launchers, 2-player cooperative missions, with one of you driving and one shooting from the back of a jeep, having duels where you can only kill by whacking each other on the back of the head with the butt of your pistol, all the varied game modes...it's great fun.

Each to their own I suppose and Halo on the PC would be a lot of fun especially with a decent multiplayer, one thing that really annoys me is split screen i like having all of my monitor to myself as well as no one can see your screen if you are all on different monitors.

their may well be more than one but most people i know are definitely in my camp, on the console vs PC debate

The 2 free controllers and games were cool and all but halo is the one game i would have bought for the x-box the others just dont appeal to me. plus microsoft lose even more money over that deal as well. As much as you may like it the x-box is going to die a death simply because to my knowledge there are no games developers willing to really put the effort into producing decent games, as a great many of the games on the x-box can be found on other platforms (ie max payne, hitman 2, harry potter etc).

I'm sorry, and you're complaining? :p

As to the other points, I have at least 5 friends who will get together and play Halo until the blisters on their thumbs turn into calluses, and that's just in my particular circle of friends...we all play PC games as well, but the whole fun of consoles is the social aspect of sitting around a TV with other people, rather than being off on your own with your PC. And there are other good games for the X-Box - Project Gotham Racing is MSR for the Dreamcast the way it was supposed to be, there's a little-known game called Hunter: The Gathering which manages to be 4-player coop Diablo with lashings of humour and heaps of zombie flesh to slice, as this thread is meant to be about (sorry frogus ;) ) Obi-Wan is a good laugh, and there's this enormously fun game called Bloodwake...boats with fat guns. 'Nuff said ;) I don't think the X-Box will die all that soon, certainly not as fast as the Gamecube will, but I do agree with you that Halo on the PC will be very cool - a different experience than on console, but great nonetheless.

the gamecube targets a tottally different market to the x-box and ps2 it is designed for a younger audience hence its games are normally bright and simple, in comparison to some games i could name. i dont believe it will die a death whereas the x-box probably will due to the lack of support it has overall.

all the other games you just named are spawns of ones already available on other consoles or the pc and none are really innovative in a way that really catches my eye, why buy an x-box when you cn play almost identical games on your ps2????

You're possibly right about the Gamecube, but...if you could play exactly the same games on either a PS2 or X-Box, at the same price, I would choose the X-Box every time...I prefer the controller, and the graphics are far better. Add to that that most of the games aren't the same, rather they have been refined into artforms (Think BG. Why would you want to buy BG2 or NWN? They're just spawns of BG, after all, with a slightly different plot to fuel your massacre. Or Diablo II. As derivative as they come, but the gameplay has been finely honed until it's near perfect). Oh, and the X-Box looks cooler ;)

the x-box controllers imho are chunky and unwieldy compared to the PS2, namely because they have about 50% of the space taken up by the big green x-box thing in the middle, they could be a lot more compact.

Most people by the time these games will have come out on the x-box will own similar versions on the PS2 not only that as i said before you can get identical titles on the PS2 that have been on the x-box

its a different ball game with sequels rather than being clones they build on the game before besoming better games where as clones have a generic storyline and generally the same ideas implemented the same way, rather than try something new

NWN is new by implementing 3rd ed rules and a different style of play to the other s (BG1 and 2) however the pc is not exempt nor is the ps2 they all have clones the x-box just seems to have nothing new and innovative (like devil may cry on the ps2)

I have very small hands, and when I tried Halo out (I don't own an X-Box, so my opinion may not mean much) it didn't take long to figure out how it worked. Granted, I got a good look at how the person before me was doing with the controls, but honestly once you get used to the size it feels very comfortable. A real clunky controller would be the N64 ones...though the buttons are in good vicinity, most of the games only used 2/3 of the controller.

BTW - Any game that lets you use the force is cool :D (Jedi Knight 1/2)

I'm sure that after a couple of hours of Obi-Wan I would get bored, but the initial thrill of proper light-saber battles is amazing  .

Incidently, when I played this I was at friend's house who has a Gamecube, PS2 and X-Box. Halo is fantastic even though I don't like FPSs that much, and all-in-all I thought that the X-Box was the best console of the three (although admittedly I have not played much of it or the Gamecube). I like the X-Box controller more than the playstation one in general -
The playstation controller has my utmost respect for it's simplicity, weight and style, and I have always loved it...but after hours of serious gaming it hurts. Anyone who has completed any of the Street Fighter series on the PS or PS2 will know that one's thumbs are not really worth calling 'thumbs' after prolonged, intense gaming...

The X Box controller is big, admittedly, but it is completely possible on the X Box control to use all of the buttons at the same time...The two back triggers, the four keypad buttons, the Dpad, and the two joysticks...you cannot do that on a playstation without adopting that wierd posture with the pad lodged between your first and second fingers  ...

@Grunt, No I have never played Jedi Knight II...but how I want to now :D

@Kam, the X-Box does not 'look cooler'. It looks like a big, big ugly box, with an 'X' on top. So there.

On the new-gen console debate, here is my synopsis:

PS2 -
Most abundent games, including some very good ones.
Prettiest console box.

X-Box -
Games equal in quality to PS2, though not in quantity.
Best controller.
Best graphics.
Best price (relative to release)

Gamecube -
Super Smash Bros Melee. :D

Also played starwars racer using the dance mat, but died horridly... :p

I can't wait to play Bishi Bashi's Random Button Bash game on this one  :D
