Do quests get harder

Post by rhodri »

I am soloing through SOA for the first time with a cleric/mage lvl 13/14 about 2.8m exp in total.

In the first level of the shade lord dungeon I ran across a group comprising of a lich, a greater mummy and two skeleton warriors with some nasty arrows.

After an epic encounter I turned the corner and ran into another group the same.

Either my memory is rusty or this is much harder than when I played with a group.

So do quests get harder based on your level starting them (I suppose I could have a party at about 2.8m each if I was doing it just before Irenicus) or is it just something weird going on?

As far as I can remember there was only one group like the one you mentioned. (In the room next to the one with the lava floor)
But I don't think they get harder by level. Maybe your difficulty was set higher?

It's no bug.
It's the same with Firkragg's lair - if you enter as a 10th level you only face a couple of golems and sometiles no vampires, but if you're highlevel, you'll get lots of golems and other fun stuff to play with.
So the quest stays the same, but the monsters summoned are compared with you character level.

Several fights get harder if your main guy/gal levels up. If you solo, you'll pretty much always get the biggest fights this way. Ghoul Town is another example.

Most of these extra spicey fights have nothing but undead in them. A solo Cleric should pretty soon be able to turn them all to tiny bits. ;)

xyx forgot the fact this area is actually an exploit. get your party level high enough, or solo cleric high enough, then after finishing quest, come back for this areaa is one of the few infinite respawn points.

cast sanctuary,a nd turn undead and walk in, explode them all, and come back later for more free xp.

undead should never present problem for clerics

Thx for the info, you're right I soon learnt tactics ofr taking down the group reasonably easily although I didn't go toe to toe with the liches.

The shade lord was as easy as ever (although the dragon was tough and I was only really there for the CF scroll).

I know the game isn't really designed for soloing but it unbalances the quests a bit when there are spawning liches who could take down the quest boss in one timestop. If they were going to make it harder couldn't they have changed the boss? Also its a position where if you have a bucketload of exp the game give you a bit 50k a group more for free, whilst if your in a group where that 50k could make a difference you don't get it. A bit like life I suppose the rich get richer...

A very minor gipe though

Pregethwr,

It's like having a real DM. Stingy on exps when your counting them to getting your 3rd level. When a player is griping you've got the mix right :D .

Good idea about shifting the bosses up as well though. I mean even if they had more HP, a lower AC, a better MR (etc) would be a nice surprise. Better give the Sahde lord an amulet of 'not exploding when turned' though ;) . - Curdis
