Parrying

Post by Thanatos »

Is it me or is skill completely useless? I've only been playing the original single player campaign so far but I have not seen one occasion where it has helped me at all even tho I have put as many points as I can on it.

It doesn't seem to block any more hits than normal (The only difference seems to be it says "parried" instead of "missed" in the message window. My character just sits there like an idiot waiting to get hit and the riposte attacks never seem to be as good as the normal ones, not that I get that many of them to begin with.

And though it's more of a nuisance than anything else, another thing that really bugs me is trying to get in and out of parry mode in combat, which seems to be totally erratic, and often it doesnt happen until after the need has passed. At least with taunt I could see from the icons on the top left whether or not it's about to do it.

You only parry as many times as you attack.

Yeah, I realize that, but even when I go one on one against another opponent, parrying still doen't help take off that many hits (if at all, I honestly don't see a difference). However, while I parry, I do almost -no- damage, since riposte is crap. Crude I know, but that's what it is.

I realy don't know why you would only get as many parries as the number of hits you would otherwise get, but that's another issue altogether.

Well, it is useless for a character which has +1 BAB per level, such as fighters. Rogues however do not. They will end the game with +15 BAB instead of +20, while your parry skill would have 24 ranks.

Parrying needs FULL dedication: Skill Focus Parry, Improved Parry, items that give parry, higher dex. Then it starts to pay off.

I agree though, it is a LOT easier to just get your strength up, strap some plate on and Kick Butt for Goodness!

Yep, I was a thief as well, and I always maxed out just hoping maybe it would pay off eventually, but it never did. The only time I end up using it was when I was fighting the dragons at the end and I used parry to tank while Grimnaw wreaked havoc from the flank.
