My thief was 16, but I've seen much higher. Haven't finished the whole game with any of my other characters yet.
Multiclassing can be very useful if you know what you're doing. You'll probably still finish the game fine even if you don't pick the best combos. Just for the hell of it I picked bard as multi after about 12 levels of rogue. edit: Oh, one last thing. Make sure you know whether or not you'll get an exp penalty for multiclassing before you do so. Some races don't allow you to have certain classes where level between the classes are too far apart. For example, an orc that has level 15 in wizard, and level 3 in druid would get a penalty. You can find out about your race's restrictions when you pick your race.
You get to pick one out of about six henchmen in the game. You can swap between these henchmen at any time (assuming you can get to them).
If you're new to CRPGs, play human fighter, the most basic class. Don't think you need to play some exotic class/race combo to make a good character, human fighters rock. If you've played CRPGs, just play what suits you best. Do you like to hack and slash everything or would you rather have a myriad of spells at your disposal that requires more thought? Remember though, you can always compensate whatever your character lacks with the right henchman, so it's not going to make it any harder or easier depending on class (welll, not really).
No, NPCs can't carry anything, and they come with their own weapons and armor.

First of all I ran into some problems with the game.
I have an elf, level1 theif and level1 ranger, I just got to meet the helm guy and lady Airbeths lover in the hall of justice and I level up. I want to be a level1 wizard and it all goes well untill I access my spell book and try to pull up my mage spells, a window pops up and says this program has performed a illegal opperation and will be terminated. Everything freezes then the game crashes. This totally sucks. I can probably continue the game just as the first two classes are concerned. Does anybody know what my problem is?
Also I would like to know how my thief can set spike traps?
Thanks, Any feedback would be helpfull

Do you have the latest patch? Otherwise, I don't know. In any case, it probably isn't a good idea to play a rogue ranger wizard. You''l never reach high level spells with the wizard, and you won't get improved two weapon fighting as a ranger, and your spereading your rogues skill points too thin.
There are very few good 3 class multiclass combinations. Paladin Fighter Cleric is quite good for instance. 2 levels of paladin for all the immunities and CHA bonus to saves, tehn take 2 fighter levels for weapon specialization (which most pen and paper players find really cheesy, since in PnP you actually have to have 4 figther lvels), then continue as cleric for the rest of your career, buffing yourself for combat and healing yourself after.
Anyway, I digress. I think an even Ranger/ Rogue multiclass should suffice to play the game.
If you are playing wizard or sorcerers and want to blast people with spells, play single class.

To set traps, you need some points in the Set Trap skill - the more the better. You'll also need to Trap Kit - these comes in many different types, and difficulty. Simply click on the Kit from your Inventory screen and select the "Use: Set Trap" option - it's at the bottom right of the radial menu that pops up - then click where you want to set the trap.Originally posted by Patrick

Alternatively, you can put the kit in your Quick Bar, then click on the trap - or press the Quick Key - and click where you want to set it.
Ranger/Rogue/Wizard
Rav:
I respectfully disagree. I'm playing a Ra2/Ro3/W7 solo right now and he rules. You just need the proper mix of stats - don't max out int, but Str, Dex, Con and Int, take toughness, Weapon Finesse, Dual-Wield Shortswords and you are invincible. No enemy can cut through 3 stoneskins and get to you while you slice and dice with Mage Armor, Bulls Strength and Cats Grace always on..and the 10% arcane spell failure almost never is an issue..
I think this is a very good combo for Fighter-Mages. Ranger for Dual-wield, Favoured Enemy, stealth. Rogue3 for Sneak attack 2d6, Uncanny Dodge, Evasion, Rogue Skills, stealth. Magic for the rest. You will never be an arch-mage, but can cast up to 3 8th level spells. I can live with that...
Personally, I think R2/Ro3/Any XXXX is the ideal combination. I always end up that way for most of my chars...

Sounds cool Indra, I wish I could play it, My spell book is corrupted or at least I think so, every time I try to work with my spells the game crashs. I could probably play it though witha fighter type charactor but that sucks, Not only that but the cut sceans are all choppy, maybe I'll just wait untill I get a better compter

I agree. I hate fighters too - there's little strategy, just hack and slash. Why don't you try ranger/rogue? Think Legolas from LoTR.. It's a beautiful class - move silently, sneak attack, Use any item, the works. Personally rogues and wizards are the most interesting classes in the game, among fighter classes rangers are the best, monks are the worst (too overpowered..there's no strategy there...plus do you really want to use your hands on some 1000 year old zombie? ..ugh!...you got to eat, you know..)
Try Ra9/Ro11 or Ra1/Ro19 or even better, Ra1/Fighter2/Ro17. Dual wield, you'll like it..But start the game as a ranger, not as a rogue. You get more skill points starting as a rogue, but better starting feat selections as a ranger..

Thanks for the advice Indra, but since I can not play a spell caster I don't think that I will play at all. Besides I don't know if my ranger will be able to cast spells at higher level. I have difficulty tring to upgrade my patch. I had 1.10 and want to upgade to 1.28 but for some reason I can not, it says it can't and aborts.

i believe in playing a pure charecter and not multiclassing. i am currently a level 6 ranger. i love rangers. they are so cool. anyways im also new to the game although i have played many similar games (i like this one the best) can someone please tell me y my rangers animal companion cant be summoned yet. its really irritating. i have the ability but i cant use it yet.
Ima Ninja! Ima Ninja!
The problem with the dual wield of the ranger is that you can not pick improved two weapon fighting. I find your concept flawed as your offensive melee capabilities as you'll reach the higher levels will simply not be good enough, as won't your hit points and your numer of attacks: it is good now, you are in the "sweet spot", but as you level up you'll start regretting having a melee side to your character at all, since it pales in comparison to your Wizard capability.
The ranger Dual Wield is only useful if you play straight ranger, as otherwise you'll get improved two weaon fighting far too late and it would be a very suboptimal choice. This is a very unfortunate side effect from adapting the PnP rules incorrectly.
