Need help with spells from experts

Now that I'm in TOB I have to start getting my spell knowledge up to par. I have to admit, I find all those spell trap, deflect, immunity, etc. to be tedious. There are so many with such little differences. I like to play so I am ready for anything and I don't have to die first before setting up for battling mages, undead, etc. I would also like some suggestions for using contingency, chained contingency and sequencer and trigger. Sometimes I find myself with all those and then nothing left to trigger! Are there any shortcuts to having the standard spells cast(stoneskin, bless, etc) automatically? thanks

Yes there is, custom scripts take care of this exact thing. Sarkyn's scripts at [url="http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bwscript/files/COMPILED/"]bwscript[/url] cater for a mind-boggling array of spells, as I believe do [url="http://www.gamers-allegiance.com/bg2/scripts.htm"]Grog's[/url].

ok, here goes:
there are 2 types of protection spells on mages:
1: spell protections
2: combat protections

now, if you want to kill the mage with spells, you will have to remove his spell protections
if you want to kill the mage with swords or any other head banging stuff, you will have to remove the combat protections. BUT, in order to remove the combat protections, you will have to remove the spell protections FIRST.

note: you cannot cast any spells (including spells to bring down protections) on an enemy that is invisible. the best thing that works against invisible targets as well as against many nasty illusion spells (simulacrum for example) is the 5th level cleric spell or 6th level mage spell "true sight". Always cast this spell before trying to remove protections from an invisible enemy.

ok, now with that pointed out, here is what you have to do to remaove protections:

1. Spell protections:
i think the best way to remove spell protections is this:
if the spell protection is spell trap, and only if it is spell trap, use ruby ray of reversal (7th level) or pierce shield (8th level).
if the spell protection is any other than spell trap (spell turning, spell deflection etc) use secret word (4th level)

this because spell trap is the only spell protection of 8th level or higher and so cannot be removed by secret word. every other spell protection can be dealt with by secret word.
i do not use "multispell protection removers" such as khelbens warding whip (7th level) because mages do almost always (if not always) seem to have only one spell protection active at a time. ofcourse, there are other tactics in using the warding whip, but i leave that to personal preferences.

now the enemy mage is ready to be blasted by your offensive spells.

2. combat protections:
this is quite simple: use breach (5th level)
that spell will bring down everything from stoneskin to protection from magical weapons to all mantle-like spells.

and now you can let minsc walk to the enemy mage and let minsc make some extra openings in him besides his natural ones (mouth, ears etc)


in short: (and in this order!!)
if enemy invisible: cast true sight
if spell protections are on, cast secret word/ruby ray
if combat protections are on, cast breach

Um... Actually you don't have to remove spell protections to cast Breach. Only Spell Shield stops Breach (or Lower Resistance, for that matter). :D

Also, you really don't have to bother with all those Secret Word/Ruby Ray type spells, as there are several easy workarounds to deal with spell protections (casting area spells at the Mage, for example).

hmm, i thought if you would cast breach on a mage with spell turning active, that the breach would be reflected to you...
oh well, guess not
