Attributes, Skills, and Traps
Attributes, Skills, and Traps
Just two quick questions:
1. Am I corrrect that attributes and skills are maxed when they attain a score of 100? Once this is reached and as you continue to level up, can you still gain hit points, magica, and fatigue increases?
2. Is the tool used to disarm traps the thieve's probe?
Thanks ahead of time. (sorry, I have no game manual)

The skill increases drive the attribute increases; each skill has a primary attribute as you can see when you run your mousepointer over it. Therefore when a skill reaches it's max it can no longer boost the attribute associated with it. There are between 3 and 5 skills attached to each attribute. Some of those will be major, some minor, and the balance misc. I believe (not sure) that major skills drive the attribute at 5x the misc. rate and the minors at 2x the misc. rate.Originally posted by Albromor

Once your Derived Attributes reach 100, that should be your max:
Health is primarily driven by Endurance; starting Health is defined as half your combined Strength and Endurance.
Magicka is primarily driven by Intelligence; starting Magicka is at half your Intelligence plus race or birthsign.
Fatigue is driven by Strength, Endurance, Agility, Willpower.
Encumbrance is driven by Strength and is 5x Strength.
Leveling up is based on a complex formula derived from improving your Skills. At a certain point you will have amassed an overall score of (?don't know, don't care?) and when you next rest, your level will increase. And based on which attributes were pushed the most by the skills that created the leveling up, you will be offered a multiplier option to increase some of those. (If you weren't confused before, your should be now, 'cause I am

You can increase your magicka by increasing your intelligence past 100. You can do this with enchanted items such as the Mentor's Ring or self made items (you will need to get the various Fortify Attributes spells first and some charged soul stones.) You can fortify any of your attributes and there will be an associated boost to your performance. The Helm of Oryn Bearclaw is a good example. I believe it boots endurance and agility by +40 each making your fatigue bar bigger and improving your chance to hit something with a weapon. Same goes for items that improve strength. For every point of strength you get 5 more pounds of carrying capacity and do more damage in melee. You can boost this way past 100 with potions for a temporary boost or enchanted CE items for a more permanent boost.

LOL! No, what happened was that I bought a new ASUS video card and Morrowind came bundled with it (which was a pleasant but unexpected surprise). Being OEM there was no Game Manual included. So as you can well imagine the need of mine to ask what may seem to others just plain obvious.
By the way, are probes like keys in that you don't equip them, you just click on the trap you want to disarm?

Probes are used just like lockpicks. You need to equip them and then click on the the trap to be disarmed.

Nice bundled deal! Any free games I get end up as instant coasters for my drinks. Anyway, check to see if there isn't a README file on the CD with the game manual. It won't be as nice as the glossy manual and map but it might be helpful. Also, since you obviously didn't get the map either you might want to download the TES Interactive Morrowind Map (check the sticky threads for the download site).

Well Uncle Scratchy, believe it or not two other games came with it as well: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six-Rogue Spear: Black Thorn, and Worms Blast. And believe it or not a number of years ago when I bought my Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer Sound Card it had Thief: The Dark Project in it. That made me a believer of the Thief series and I am looking with anticipation towards the third in the series.
I never thought of the README File on the CD. I do know that when the play screen comes up there is no ReadMe File option. I'll have to check my Program File.
And thanks for heads-up on the TES map download. As much as I am impressed with Bethesda's game, their In-Game map has tons to be desired. You would think that with the immense size of this world they would realize that a high quality map would be essential. They need to improve on this in dramatic leaps and bounds. I even bought the official Game Guide to help with the map (I stay away from the spoilers), but it is of poor quality and very hard to read. They say that with the addition of Tribunal you can now flag the map for important areas. Do you know how to access this?

I was referring to 'normal' circumstances, of course. UncleScratchy's point is well taken - wearing enchanted items can boost your normal skill and attirbute levels WAY above 100.
One thing to be aware of when fighting certain magic using NPC's and creatures: they may throw 'drain' spells at you. If you wear 'fortify' attribute/skill constant effect apparel, you may not notice that your attribute/skill is reduced after the battle because the attribute/skill is boosted. Bonewalkers are well known for this. After you battle them, and the dust settles, remove your enchanted apparel and check your attribute/skill levels: any that are in the red need to be 'restored'.

Which Game Guide? If it is not Morrowind Prophesies, then it may not be as official as you think. I say this because the maps in the there are excellent. They do have a few errors, but...

Double-left click on the map location of interest and a dialogue box pops up.
Sorry about the implication of not buying. Many attend these forums looking for help because they didn't buy, usually indicated by not having the map and book.
