Good Players

Post by Rock_Steady »

What is the measure of a good player? Is the gamer that repeats an encounter 10 times or more until he/she has the perfect solution considered a good player? An excellent strategist? Is the player that wins an encounter on the first try considered a better player? Is there anybody that completed the game without reloading? If there is, then I would say he/she/they are the best players. To me, how you do the first time you play an encounter is the true measure of how good a player you are. As an example, I just defeated the two beholders in the underdark. I lost Anomen and Nalia was turned to stone (and I can't restore her). If I could restore Nalia, I wouldn't reload because I don't think I did that bad. Had I known there were beholders on the other side, it would have been alot easier. But I didn't, and that is why the game is so much fun!

I don't believe that there is a plain answer to this question.I believe every player has a personal "code" that he followes,a code that we usually adopt by playing this kind of games. This rule especially applies to players who are of some age and have a sowewhat bigger experience in CPRGs (but this doesn't mean they are better players!)

I personally try to play these games the way the designers planned it.That means I don't use the import/export options in order to have a stronger character or better equipment. If i start a new game, i will start with a newly created character. With BG2 i just imported a character that had completed BG1,but i think his 126,000 exp is ridicilous to talking about advantage over a new created PC.Besides, this character has fought all the way from BG to Durlag's Tower so i think he deserves a try in BG2.But i imported him only for my second try on the game.

I have the impression that you "get" more of a game like this if you start a new character. With this game this impression is even stronger since there are so many classes and kits to try and experiment with. This fact gives BG2 a very high replay value-i think the biggest in recent CRPGs.

As for the combat,i simply try not to get any of my NPCs getting killed in any battle (middle difficulty). That of course means that i reload a lot,but i think that is the idea of having NPCs with you. There are here to help you,add their skills with yours and make it through the end of the game.Otherwise you should play solo.I don't like them to be dead. And i don't believe it is easy to defeat dragons or Irenicus without having them getting killed.

The only excpection to this "rule" of mine was when i was fighting Irenicus in hell.I sowehow knew that this was the final battle and i had lost Imoen (permanently) in the fight in Suldanesselar. So i said to myself "Ok,you didn't make it boy,you couldn't protect her and now she is dead. Now you have to live with the consequences of this failure".So i didn't reload the battle.I just beat Irenicus with 5 characters. That fact made the battle like a personal matter.

As for the strategic element,i think the game actually forces you to be a strategist (after all player formatons is a strategic element by itself).I have the feeling that the designers wanted us to reload often - I mean, how else could you know about the dragons abilities like wing buffet or dragon breath without facing them just for once?Or the lich's range of spells? But this strategic element makes the game fun and battles challenging (ok,some are a bit annoying). But i agree, overall the game is fun!

IMHO there is no need for this thing u called good player or whatever u mean that is. Everyone who play the game just want to have fun with it and there is no competition in this kind of thing unless you're a complete Quake fan.
Yes, as Bill says everyone have their own standard...so IMHO there's nothing called good player or whatever that is.
BTW Rocky do you still saying these things :
