Equipment

Post by Mr Sleep »

It is pretty much established that Crom Fayer is the best weapon on the game - give or take blackrazor - but it is also the most difficult to procure, what equip do most people use and is ease of attainment related to this.

Do you find speed an important part or more interested in the overall damage.

My opinion on weapons is that damage aint that important. Spells and items that make u imune, faster, stronger (hit points) or make your thaco better are far more useful.

Its fun to have a strenght of 21(or 25) but when your thaco sux it wont help u that much. Speed could in that case tip the balance in your favor.I would rather hit something with 2 times (dealing 14 deamge each time) in a given time than hit it 1 time and doing 18 damage. More damage in the same time (see my point)

Babarians have a kewl balance of speed and strenght. My best friend had a barbarian, halforc, that could kick my "lvl 16 cavalier's" ass (without magical weapons) only after completing chapter 1.

speed vs damage (SPEED WINS)

I remember on BG how devastating the Short Sword of Backstabbing was, it had a speed factor of 0, haste your character aswell and you a gonna' do some serious hurt Image

The weapons thing comes down to preferences:

First time round I was a kensai, at Lvl 17 and w/ 5* in two-handed sword and 2* in two-handed weapon style I was getting 3 attacks per round of 40-70 damage per attack using the silver sword (THAC0 -12). Thats a lot of damage anyway you look at it.

I'm currently playing a swashbuckler dueled at lvl 12 to a fighter. I'm currently a Lvl 16 fighter with 3* in Duel-Wield, 4* in long sword and 2* in War Hammer. With Crom-Faeyr in the off-hand and the equaliser in my main hand I have THAC0's of -12 and -10 respectively, and average damages of 25 to 50, 70+ on Critical Hits + all the protections that were mentioned earlier in the posts (oh and 4 attacks per round).

I guess its personal preferences but Crom Faeyr is a bit unbalancing as the 25 strength gives you a -7 bonus to THAC0 before the weapon modifiers.

As the game proceeds you have a lot of neat spells that cause your characters to become much faster, so I believe raw damage and low THAC0 are the most important things to consider while choosing a weapon.

My favorite weapons are those of my Cheese (Kensai/Mage) - Equalizer and Dawnbringer, or Daylighter or something (the one which causes sunburst). Of course the Celestial Fury is downright amazing, and with the right play you can get it very early in the game, and the Holy Avenger is very powerful (though getting it might be a bit harder :-D)

In one on one combat, Celestial Fury is the best weapon in the game. The stun ability is incredibly powerful and as a katana it essentially does 2-h damage from a 1-h weapon. It's fun with a monk to do stunning blow, quivering palm, attack with Celestial Fury and watch the victim try to make 3 saves.

Blackrazor sounds nice, but I have yet to see it actually do any of the cool things is says it does and I had a character back-imported wielding it for a while.

Against multiple opponents, Crom Faeyr is the best, but it costs a lot of good equipment to make. With Crom Faeyr you get the Str 25 bonus, but you give up the Str 21 belt and the Str 18/00 gloves. If you have a character skilled in warhammers it will benefit them, but it may cost the party overall.

Barbarians are brutally effective and for one of them, I think the best weapon combination would be Crom Faeyr + Defender of Easthaven. BTW, Defender IS a +3 Flail, the stats in it's description are all messed up. It's identical to the Flail of Ages except instead of the acid/fire/ice it has defensive abilities (AC, 20% resist).

I have a nice Barbarian (imo) using dual +3 axes (Frostreaver and Stonefire). I like the bonus fire and acid/cold damage, it tears up those pain in the butt enemies that are immune to damage. Anyone else using something similar?
