If I got this right, a Multi-class-person can get the top levels of both classes, but if you are dual-classing, you dont get higher on the first when you dual?
Was this right?
Is it then possible to have a mage/cleric at both top levels?

I bring hope to those who have none
I bring light where darkness is

From the book, but it can be a little confusing...
A multi-class character advanced both classes simultaneously so their exp is always split evenly between the two.
A dual-class character advances first one class then the other. They lose the ability to use the abilities of the first class until their second class passes it. At that point they are very similar to the equivalent multi-class charcter BUT...as they advance further, they only advance the new class and generally become much better at it than with their first.
So a multi-class character will always have class levels something like 8/9, 9/8, 12/10, 9,9 while a dual class character could be 4/17 (Nalia, level 4 thief dualed to level 17 wizard).
Due to the exp cap in BG2, a multi-class character will generally max our around level 13-14 in each class depending on what the class is.

So when you're playing a multi-class, like Nighthawk said, the experience is evenly divided between all the classes you have.
However, for the experience cap, you TOTAL experience is regarded - so the game sums up all the experience points you have in total. This also holds for dual class characters.
The cap is placed at 2,950,000 experience points (yeah, that's 50,000 too little for the mage to be able to memorize level 9 spells), so if you have a multi-class of two classes, the individual caps are at 1,475,000 points, and for 3 classes it doesn't even go beyond about 983,000 if I'm right, per class.
For dual-classes, I can take my fighter/thief as example. He dual classed at level 6 to thief, so he had 32,000 experience in his fighter class. Therefore he couldn't reach more than 2,918,000 experience in his thief-class.
