1) To help your party evade psionic attacks:

- Chaotic Commands (though it can only be casted on one person at a time; really helps, though)

- Lilarcor (+3 Two-Handed Sword w/ immunity to confusion)

- Brine Potions (if you already have access to them; if not, then CC is best)

2) To help your party kick some Mindflayer arse (note: these tactics are for use with the normal game, SoA/ToB patch included)

- Summoned Creatures, and use ranged weapons (the monsters/animals you summon will act as cannon fodder, while your characters, armed with whatever ranged weapons they are proficient in, will pick off the mind flayers)

- Lower Resistance (Mind Flayers/Illithids have quite a bit of Magic Resistance, which IIRC, can be temporarily reduced so spells can hit them)

- Berserker Rage (I believe that the berserker kit's enrage ability makes him temporarily immune to psionic attacks; may or may not)

Hope this helps.

This is an area I usually do in the later chapters when I'm higher level.
It's very difficult, if you don't succeed, try again later.
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

I have found hasted skeletons and (much preferably) skeletal warriors to be extremely helpful when struggling as they are immune to most of the psionics and the brain drain. If you aren't under time constraints to finish this, you might want to take a room, rest & regroup and take another room.

The first couple times through here can be frustrating and the illithids should always be handled with care.

Heh

Mind Flayers are certainly tough opponents, but then they're supposed to be, so don't feel bad - I think pretty well everyone got their heads handed to them first time around.

Galuf's advice is sound, but a few other points to keep in mind:
Some summoned creatures are immune to their mind stuff - undead, aerial servants, invisible stalkers, Mord swords, for instance. They're even better hasted.
Their Umber hulk pets are suckers for cloudkill - with a little finesse, you can trap them in a room, shoot cloudkill in and slam the door. Rmember, even the smartest monster in BG2 cannot open a door
I don't believe that even berserkers are immune to their melee mind drain attack - and Minsc's berserk is not REAL enrage, and doesn't protect properly, IIRC
Try to split them up. It's much easier to kill 1 than 5.
Prep your fighting area! Ensure that only resistant/immune creatures are in the melee, and have everyone else pelt them with missiles. If possible, pull them across thief traps
Kill them quickly or beat a retreat - in long fights, they will tear you to pieces.

Have fun!

a mage fighter with

dual wield with improved haste
chaotic commands
free action

and protection from magic weapons

will be protected from everything they can do....make sure you drink many potions of intelligence in case the protection from magic weapons wears off...

Bowman with haste spell and high hide ability is superior( for a backup you can summon some mordekainer swords-immune to normal dmg, fire and many other things....)
I beat up all illithides and ultralitides in mindflayers keep in underdark with my bowman
the scheme:
1. Hide your ranger
2. Check number of opponents
3. Summon few creatures ( for distraction)
4. kill with ranged attack as many as you can
5. Retreat and hide again
6. return to point 1

Here is the way I usually use in killing monsters in rooms, not just mind slayers.

To do it, you need to have a wand of Cloudkill, two would be better.

1. make your mages invisible and add haste on them.

2. move them near the door which lead to the room with mind slayer. Open the door. A small area of the room will be defogged, so you can use your wand of cloudkill there. It will much better if you have two wands and use them simultaneously. after used the wand, remember to "close the door" and wait the mind slayers to die inside.

3. if you use two wands together, they guarantee the death of all mind slayers. If you have only one, some high level slayers could survive. you can summon the monsters and use long-distance weapons to do the final killings. If the slayers are of the second or last room, just lead them to another room and do the cloudkill-and-close-door procedures agian.

p.s. cloudkill spell casted from mage is useless due to the slayer's high magic resistence. however, the wand

oh yeah...

suggestin...when using skeleton warriors against normal mindflayers, haste them and cast mass invisibility on them. 5 can finish off the entire mind flayer dungeon in the underdark in core...

now improved ones will d gate past the closed door, and i think most of the doors don't close anymore anyway...

the only safe method of killing improved mindflayes is to have everyone drink potions of intelligence...blue ones are best, they last a long time, then use greater deathblow.. :p :p :p

well, I forgot how the mind flayers in underdark react to the door-closed situation. I finished the game long time ago. I replay it again recently and just finished the battle in the sewer. The mind slayers there were not powerful enough to pass the door and every door can be closed.

oh, I made a mistake. The door of the last room in the sewer can't be closed, so you need to lead the mind slayers to the corridor or another room.
