Arcanum Board

Post by fable »

Here's an RPG that's fresh out, and probably deserves an area of its own.

Arcanum is a RPG in the style of Fallout. It combines sword and sorcery with industrial revolution. It has an open-ended story line and a content editor.

Yeah, it's pretty good. It uses the Fallout engine, but instead of just being a tech CRPG, it plays off Jules Vernian tech against class fantasy spells.

The ability to pit scientists against wizards, to me is one of its biggest drawcards.

Arcanum is a great RPG for both Fallout-lovers and Fantasy-lovers, although nothing for the novice. But it doesn´t use the Dungeons&Dragons system... itsn´t that what gamebanschee is about???
I wager the turnip market is making a killing today!

@Shadow Warrior

Not really, I for one prefer games like Max Payne and UT over any Dungeouns and Dragons stuff. I just like the games produced by Black Isle such as BG, BG2 and the up-coming NWN.

I've never played the pen version of Dungeons and Dragon and have no intention of ever planning to play it. I just like good RPG games, and Arcanum seems to be a good one.

How about first starting an "Official Arcanum" Thread? After some discussion and reflection This can establish if it's worth starting an entire forum for it.

Has anyone actually played it? I heard it was buggy like Baton Rouge.
Damn I good lookin'. My mother told me so.

It is definitely an interesting game. I'm just beginning a new game and purchased it last week. A lot of us may be spoiled on the infinity engine; combat certainly does not seem as fluid and requires turn based use which slows things down. Also, the instructions of the game are fairly cryptic where it doesn't really explain everything in detail that you see on the screen. I am just starting out and probably need to reread the manual which is about 190 pages (a good thing, mind you). This does place one thing in perspective however. Occasionally we come across threads in BG/IWD that seem to be elementary questions and sometimes lash out at those posts. But now I understand where they are coming from. Having a long time knowledge of DnD, I had little to gain by reading any of the manuals from the BG/IWD series. But to someone who has no prior knowledge of the game/world of DnD, those manuals must be monumental to digest. I am facing the same thing in Arcanum, there are a lot of things the manual doesn't point out and it takes a while to figure it out. Let's get some more of you out there with this game to post here and talk about it to see if we can get a forum started.
Crush enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of the women.

With PoR being a monumental dissapointment (for me at least) I would say to create an Arcanum Board and drop Pool of Radiance... :( I played through the demo of Arcanum (even though it is damn slow on my comp) and i have to say that this game is genius. It does take some getting used to but just the pure variety of skills, stats, spells, backgrounds, races, techs and NPCs make this game a very different game each run through. This has to be the game with the best character development ever IMHO. :D

As we've just gotten several new Dark Age of Camelot boards, can't we spare one category for Arcanum? :)
