I was just wondering about the implications of multi-classing a high level monk with a level or so of magician level.
Strikes me that monks have a whole bunch of spell resistance, and that they cannot normally use scrolls or the like. Will this interfere with them using spells/scrolls etc if I were to add say 2-3 levels of magician?
Multi-class a monk and a magician?
There should be little to hinder for multiclassing a monk into some arcane caster class, although I fail to see the reason for this.
Of couse you can then cast spells from scrolls, but I have often found my monk to be much more effective at running up to something and giving a big wack. I couldn't imagine him standing behind a henchmen casting a spell.
A monk gets really powerfull at higher levels - therefore I rarely multiclass them (except if I play a roleplaying game (multiplayer) and have some in-game motive)
But if you want to cast spells from scrolls or some wands - a level of wizard should work out just fine - depending on race due to multiclass XP penalty, of couse. If you will run into a penalty I would not recommend it at all, because the benifits are to small for that (IMO)

well, if you like and want the idea of a warrior-magi, then i would say that a monk/wizard or monk/sorceror would better fit the bill than a fighter, ranger or barbarian multiclass. since the monk does not use armor nor rely on weapons. if you're worried the monks Spell resistance (SR) interfering with your own spell casting, do not be. SR only works against spells cast against you, it will not effect your own spellcasting capability.
Mage Spells/Multiclass with Monk
I've planned to add two to three levels of Wizard to my Monk since character creation, allocating ability scores appropriately.
My goal would be to allow the character to cast Mage Armor upon himself prior to difficult battles. If I take 3 levels of Wizard, then Bull's Strength or Cat's Grace have obvious advantages.
Right now I have one level of Wizard (School: Necromancy, prohibited: Divination). On more than one occasion my famliar has saved my rear, so I don't mind the decision.
However, even when I try to level up as a Wizard to level 2, I am never offered Mage Armor as a spell. I seem to be offered the same slate, no randomness in the allocation. In fact, it seems I am offered to learn every Level One spell except than Mage Armor.
It's fairly bothersome to create a character to use a specific spell, and then be denied that spell. My intelligence is pretty high (16), so I don't think that is the reason.
Any ideas? Does possession of scrolls affect the spells one can learn as in some older RPGs? At this point, I'd even resort to a hack to alter my known spells.
If I knew for sure that a third level Wizard would pick up Mage Armor, I might go that route, but I'd shoot my character if it didn't become available.

Well...
I don't know why you don't get access to Mage Armor when you level up to level 2, but wizards can also learn spells from scrolls, so you could try to find a scroll of mage armor and right click it - then select learn.
That should write it into your spell book from where you then can select it to memorize.
If you can't do this - then are you 100% sure it isn't already in your spell book?
I've not heard/read of any bug where one spell is "missing", so trying to pin point the problem
Oh - and btw - there is no randomness in what spells you select from. The spell pool is the same, and the spells you haven't selected at level up - you can learn from scrolls. (as opposed to sorcerers)

Hi..
I am quite sure that the spell Mage Armor is a Conjuration spell. So the only logic explenation is that you do not have acces to this school.
I am quite sure i have read somewhere that you have to choose 2 prohibeted schools in 3rd edition, but i have not been able to find that on wrinting... Sorry..

In NwN there is only one prohibited school for a specialist arcane caster.
This is written in the manual on page 92 (well - p.92 in my version.)
I do however think the rules for 3.ed D&D is infact different from the rules implemented in NwN, based on experience with the ruleset before NwN was released, but I don't have any rulebooks so can't tell for sure, and that can also have been changed by WotC since.
And Mage Armor is infact Conjuration, and the schools that have Conjuration as prohibited are Evocation and Transmutation.
Necromancy has Divination as Zebulon also mentioned.

It is probably some kind of bug (though I have never heard of such a case), though if you are only going to cast it before a hard battle shield may be a superior spell (though note that it provides a shield bonus not armour). If you are only going to take 2-3 levels of wizard why do you have 16 intelligence? If you just want to use scrolls perhaps taking a level of Rogue/Bard for UMD would be better (or perhaps taking divine levels which share your WIS for casting).
In third edition prohibited spells work differently, you can choose you prohibited schools based on what school you choose to specialize in. For example: Abjuration: prohibited from Conjuration, Evocation, Necromancy or Illusion; or both Divination AND Necromancy.

"Heya! Have you been to Baldur's Gate? I've been to Baldur's Gate... Oops, stepped into something. Have you stepped into something?"
Thanks for the feedback!
All is well with the world, Mage armor spell learned.
It is a good point that only a couple of levels of Wizard may not be the best allocation of levels.
It's always bittersweet to read the FAQs and advice half-way through a game and think back as to what you should have done differently. While I still like the idea of a dual class elven Monk/Wizard, I would flip flop and do almost all Wizard with a few Monk levels. This would give good unarmed combat at the lower levels, reflex saves, and allow the use of Monk-only magical items.
Based upon where I am currently, L9 Monk, L2 Wizard, I am shooting for a L12 Monk, L 8 Wizard. While that gives up access to 5th level Wizard spells, the Monk abilities at Levels 10 through 12 are too enticing to give up (notably innate spell and poison resistance). I primarily solo, so this looks to be a character that would be good at a lot of things, albeit great at none.
