Darkness is a natural ability of the Drow, and functions just like the 2nd level spell. It affects a 20-ft area, and lasts 10 minutes per level. It is directed at an object (hence the Drow slapped the ground) and the spell is anchored to that object. It blocks all light sources, both magical and mundane (meaning lanterns or torches do no good). I don't know if there is a saving throw against it.

The first Drow to enter the cavern was seen to cast the spell, but additional drow will probably cast additional darkness spells in order to expand the effected area and maintain the darkness. Daylight is the counter spell, and Dispel Magic should also work. Now here's my question: Considering that the Drow who cast the spell are themselves blinded, would they know when their Darkness is dispelled? I think they might, since they have the ability to de-activate the spell at will, and I assume this means they can "feel" the spell's presence. Also they might hear a counter spell being cast, assuming they could recognize it.

There are 11 Drow attacking, in a sort of "Forlorn Hope". Since they are blind, it is unlikely that they will use their crossbows. Nippy has already engaged one. Since they also have to fight hand-to-hand, they probably won’t be levitating either.

I'm sorry for bringing in all this darkness stuff, but I just finished playing HotU, where the Drow successfully cast darkness on my epic level half-elven Cleric/Champion of Torm (named T'lainya! ;) ) to great affect. I also just finished reading "Insurrection," the second book in the War of the Spider Queen series, which was much better than many Forgotten Realms books generally are. So its been nothing but Drow, Drow, Drow for me lately!

One interesting aspect of both HotU and War of the Spider Queen, is the disappearance of Lolth, causing her clerics and all the Matron Mothers much consternation. This actually fits rather well with out story, in that it gives the Drow a reason to be helping out with constructing the Abomination, since they think that Lolth had taken over Moander's avatar. It also means that Drow clerics who worship Lolth have to rely on scrolls and artifacts for their power. I find that very interesting. :)
That there; exactly the kinda diversion we coulda used.

Well, I think Dispel Magic should make the darkness dissipate, but I left it open-ended out of respect to any plans people might have ;)
Also, DW was having a claustrophobia-induced panic attack, so should anyone want to extend our time in the dark it would be easy enough for me to write a post discussing that raw fear had eroded her casting ability. Besides, DW has a history or occasionally miscasting spells :D :p

I read it as if DW had started casting but not yet finished it. :)

I think everyone’s writing has been excellent!

I’m worried for Aqua Chan – she is starting to see similarities between herself and the Abomination. That can’t be good. I also hope that AC’s feelings of being lost are not a reflection of her writer’s current mood. If so, I hope things get better for you, AC! :)

I wonder what Scayde will write? ;)

I didn’t think that BS would be crying for his mommy so soon, but I really shouldn’t have been surprised. :p

I hadn’t thought about DW’s claustrophobia when the Darkness was cast…. I really like how she handled it! I used to do some cave exploring, and it was strange when you would be deep underground and you turn out the lights. Even in a big cavern, the total absence of light feels like it was closing in around you. It can be very disorienting, not even knowing where your own hands are…

Mysteria’s use of Fang as her seeing-eye wolf was perfect! :D

I would like to note that we have now had several on-topic posts in this thread - a new record! :D

Thanks Gwally :) I found it pretty challenging to write that, because I suffer from claustrophobia in RL, and actually putting into words that sensation of utter terror was far more difficult than I would have imagined....

:D No, no. As of right now, I'm mentally secure in my own little world. *hugs* ;)

My Life as an Adventurer
by Gwalchmai Freewalker
Notes and Ideas

Again I am reminded of how important Clerical abilities are to the Adventuring Party. Spells to heal, remove poison, paralysis, and other maladies can be found as potions, but Clerics can cast these spell without you having to suffer the awful taste of a potion.

On a related note, Clerics of Corellon Larethian smell nice. Much nicer, in fact, than Ranger/Clerics of Mielikki.
ROFL! :D Clearly no Buckleys for Gwally :p

Or should that read Gwally's Mixture....

Somehow, Gwally, I find your olfactory preferences reassuring

Your remarking that your prefer the scent of clerics of Corellon Larethian over that of Ranger/Clerics of Mielikki ;)

But if you're relieved, then I can only assume that you previously had doubts about my olfactory prowess? :(
