Only the protagonist may get one, if you didn't know that already.

Fun and games with famiiliars (spoilers?)
I believe there are some tricks that can be used to give non-protagonist chars a familiar, including non-mages. I think it has to do with the old pause, open inventory, drink potion, substitute the familiar scroll where the potion was, close inventory, unpause routine. Try it if you like but be aware its a cheese tactic using a flaw in the game code. On the up side it grants your char extra hps I believe. Then if you want you can get rid of the familiar using the old fill up your inventory with the familiar in one of the slots then do a quest that gets you a reward of an item. The familiar should be dropped on the ground when the game tells you "You can't carry anything more, item dropped on the ground" message. You can opt to leave the familiar there in its inventory state (unanimated object). Leave, keep the bonus points and then get another familiar using the spell for more bonus points.
Familiars can also be used to smuggle drow items out of the Underdark without them being turned to dust. I requires having the familiar pickpocket the drow items. But that's another story.

In my previous post I indicated that I thought an NPC could get a familiar by using the potion/spell scroll swap trick. Well I just tried it with Immy and it didn't work. Got a message that said "Only protagonists can have a familiar". So I was mistaken. Just wanted to set the record straight.

just enough for piffel cloak in underdark, (sola's wonder cloak) and the rift device...
(ranged harm, ignores magic resistance, no save...)
They call me Darth...

But could you please tell me what alignment you must have to get a pickpocketing familiar, its more for carrying endless amounts of items of any weight without encumberence
That's what the bag of holding is for, but you have to be a ways into the game before you get one
