Yeah they get drained aswell and potions protect you. The problem is that you need to protect yourself from the nasty death and imprisonment effects of the machine, and potions dont work when protected from magic whereas items do.
Or you'll be doing a lot of reloading and then the cheese loses its touch
It needs testing

Okay I have now spent some time pressing buttons and pulling levers and it seems that only dex and int are drained.
The nasty effects are lose 15 levels, imprisonment, flesh to stone, some kind of gas and various damage. Sometimes you recieve a potion and sometimes 100 000 xp. So the trick might be to roll up a character /preferably berserker) with 3 dex and 3 int. Have int drained in dream and dex in hell and then head over to WK and machine of lum the mad, drink a potion of mind focusing, have someone cast deathward on you, enrage and then press away. Soon you'll have dex and int 25, you have to be lucky to get both equally or you'll end up with 24 or 23 in one of them. So maybe have a slightly higher dex to start with to ensure that that is where you get 25.
Then you can have a character like this
dwarven berserker
str 25 (crom)
dex 25 (this cheat)
con 23 items and hell bonuses
int 25 (this cheat)
wis 19 (hell bonus)
cha 25 (rod of terror)
not bad eh?

Okay the cheese is now ready to be served.
Ingredients, something to protect you from imprisonment, level drain, flesh to stone, lightning, fire and poison.
For example: red dragon scale, cloak of reflection, ring of fire control, mace of disruption +2, ring of gaxx and a scroll of prot from magic.
If you use prot from magic to protect from imprisonment and stone to flesh then you need items to raise dex and int. Gauntlets of dexterity and golden ioun stone will do. If you use spell or enrage then you can drink a potion of mind focusing.
When pressing any combination other than the ones provided by the notes one of the following effects randomly takes place.
Lightning damage (not stopped ny prot from magic)
Fire damage (not stopped by prot from magic)
Lose fifteen levels
Flesh to stone
Imprisonment
poison gas
lose one point dex or int
gain 100 000 xp (individual)
I tried it with korgan and he got more dex drains then int drains so when his dex went around to 25 (this happens when it goes below zero and you are temporary protected by the gauntlets. you have to keep track of the score because if you take of the gauntlets when dex is zero you die) his int was 0 (1 with the ioun stone) he was the drained another 4 dex points before beinng drained the next int point. Now this int point did not kill him but took him straight to 25 so golden ioun stone works just fine.
As you would probably rather have dex 25 and int 20 or so then the other way around this works best with characters with lower int stats then dex stats. You could save the int and dex raisers from the machine to correct the scores afterwards aswell.
As a side note Korgan gained 1.7 million xp in the process aswell.
Pretty useful machine yes?
Here is a screenshot of korgan before the int got below zero. Removing the ioun stone will kill him out of pure stupidity

OK so far Ive worked out there are 54 combinations if each selection is from a different category (lever, shape, colour)
does anyone know if the combinations also include some from the same category (eg level shape lever)?
a little more working shows that there are probably more than a thousand combinations...i will be there a while.
Maybe I will get bunbun
he should help avoid the reloading

You have to keep track of how many point you have lost. Don't take the ring off until the CHR score is negative. 0 will kill you.Originally posted by Mini Me

On this note, would the DEX actually keep decreasing if you left the gloves on? My understanding is that the cheese works because the game engine can't handle negative attribute scores. If that is the case, shouldn't the DEX just keep getting more and more negative until you take the gauntlets off, at which time it will pop up to 25? So, you would only have to worry about the INT score, becaues the Ioun Stone doesn't set the stat but increases it.
Or does the wrap around occur as soon as the stat drops below 0? I had thought that with the Rod of Terror exploit it didn't matter when you took the ring off, as long as the number was less than 0.
Resistance to Tyrants is Service to God.
You should be able to get 25 wisdom as well, with Hrotghar's Axe +3 and Kachiko's Wakizashi +3, both purchasable from Joluv in the Copper Coronet.
Equip Hrothgar's Axe (+1 wisdom while equipped) and let another character attack the wielder with Kachiko's Wakizashi (-2 wisdom per hit for 2 rounds).
It could take some time though, because the attacked character can save vs the wisdom drain.

Unfortunately that wisdom trick wont work. For two reasons, the drain is temprary and it is red, meaning it is the same kind of drain as shadow strength drain. Unfortunately that is also the case with the constitution drain from a dying familiar. It is permanent but red so no wrap around.
Yeah it may be that as long as you are wearing the ring or the gauntlets it stays at 25, have to be tested.
The only set effects from the machine are the ones listed in the notes, pressing anything else will result in a random effect from the ones I listed.
So 25 is possible for charisma int and dex now we need to figure out how to get 25 con str and wisdom aswell.

Hmm, the only occasion I can think of where you lose wisdom permanently is the demon guarding the gate in the dream after Irenicus steals your soul..
But that's only one point of wis, not enough for the trick...

"If you enter in an INVALID combination, you get some really bad random
effects (well, mostly bad):
10% chance to gain a Potion of Superior Healing.
10% chance to get 100,000 experience (only for whoever used it)
10% chance to become Imprisoned (bad if it's your main character)
10% chance for 50 fire damage
10% chance turned to stone (bad if it's your main character)
10% chance to lose 1 INT
10% chance for 75 lightning damage
10% chance to be poisoned
10% chance to lose 15 levels
10% chance to lose 1 DEX"
i am wondering if spell immunity abjuration, and amulet of power will protect you from imprison and level drain. both can be handled with restoration scrolls and freedom spell, so its not even a big issue. protection from petrification will protect you from even scripted stoning...like the bridge in brynnlaw.. this is great!!! thanks all of you for testing!!!

Yeah amulet of pwer protects from level drain and spell immunity from imprisonment just as usual. The bad effects can all be easily avoided so this machine is indeed very cheesy.
Yeah in the dream you lose one point in the ability of your choice. Too bad the familiar trick didn't work.

of course, if the con drain is red, that implies that something could restore con...remove curse??? restoration???

I think the difference between a red stat change and a hwite one is that the red one ends up in the affects page in SK. Therefore it will kill you and not wrap around. There is no restration for the con drain from familiar death.
The strength bonus from hell is red, it is under affects.

Just out of curiosity would spell immunity - divination protect from the attribute drain the same as it does with the demon in hell?
If so....
Death ward, cloak of reflection, ammulet of power, ring of anti-venom (or gaxx), bump fire protection to 100 (theres a ton of stuff to do this). And wouldnt the only things you can get be the exp, the potion and imprisonment? Wouldnt be a half bad exp exploit.
