What do you think is the best class?
Pretty self-explanatory. State your favorite class and justify why you think it is the best. Ex.
I think that the monk is the best class because even though you must be human to use them, the bonuses they get make them more than equal to any other class. Just think for a second.
Immunity to disease: Not really useful, but hey, it helps some
Immunity to poison: Very, very useful, especially against spider
Lay on hands: 80 hp healed, think about it
Immune to normal weapons: it frees up another choice for the tears of bhaal, but thats about all.
Stunning Blow: Incredible, paired with greater whirlwind, thats ten chances to stun the enemy!
Quivering Palm: Not that great because the things you really want to use them on are always saving, but great to avoid long, drawn out mage battles. (stoneskin doesn't affect the death!!!)
Magic resistance: Think: 78% resistance, +10 for the ring of gaxx, +10 for the tears of bhaal, +5 for the ammy of power or the 10% amulet =103 or 108% resistance!!!!!!!!!

There are more threads about this topic.
You might try a search.
In the early parts of the game, the wildmage can be VERY powerfull (with his special lvl1 spell you can cast any spell you want as long as you ahve scribed it at lower levels).
The kensai mage a very good character. A mage that can do massive damage.
And the kensi thief is realy good after UAI, although this is a little to cheesy for me.
As for singleclasses I found the Inquisitor very good, his/heres true sight comes in handy in lots of battles.
And nothing can beat an good old assassins x7 backstab!
Just some thoughts, but any class can be very powerfull, with the right equipment. I once thought that druids werent powerfull, wait untill you see their lvl7 spells!!!
The only class I dont realy like (but alot of people disagree with me) is the bard (and their kit's)

I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.
Hmm...
For this debate to be meaningful, you need to define "best" - best solo, best damage dealer, most satisfying roleplay, best at low level, best at high level, best naked, best geared to the hilt, otherwise you're going to get "apples and oranges" discussions.
I think it's pretty difficult to argue that anyone could equal a well equipped high level sorceror for pure destructive power. Sorcerors have the huge advantage of only needing to load their triggers & contingencies, no other spell prep at all. Solo sorcerors suffer somewhat in adventuring, but in a duel or party situation, no other class comes close.
Other than that, the usual suspects: Kensai/thief, Kensai/mage, Cleric/ranger. Some will argue for other classes, (single or dual/multi) too, but most acknowledge the intrinsic cheesiness of those classes.
Good gaming!

I have given up all lesser evils as inadequate to my purpose.
i totally agree with stilgar & nephtu - this "poll" needs to be categorizied, and the parameters of judging the class defined.
two kits i'd like to add to those posted already are a stalker and an archer. both are VERY well suited for their roles, solid nearly cheese-free kits, provide natural roleplay without "gimping" the rise-to-power progression of a godchild.

Your right. I meant for soloing.
I agree that the poll of sorts needs to be catagorized. I was attempting to imply that it was about the best class to solo. I don't know about you, but I absolutely hate my party. I use them only when necessary, like when battling super-evil monsters like the demi-lich. Thanks for the tip. I am anxios to see how things like the bard and wild mage are now justified.

Sorcerer wins all of those categories (ToB forum -> 'low level' = 2.5mill exp). They're also completely unproblematic to solo, and hardcore owning-machines in parties
unf
The most powerful class of course would be an assassin/mage dualed in ToB combine assassination and assassins already extremely insane x7 backstab with mage buffers, (particularly BBoD and Tenser's Transformation) you've got a character who is untouchable no matter if he has items or not, or if he's soloing or not.
SIDE NOTE: Annoying to get the mage level up past the assassins though.

Like has been said before, depends on your style.
My favourite is the Fighter/Theif multi. This is what I used to play most in the PnP version as well. I usually play as a theif that can pack a punch as apposed to a fighter that does a little theiving on the side.
In BGII I use a little SK magic to add a kit. I prefer the Barbarian/Theif the most. The Kensai/Theif & Wizard Slayer/Theif are both more powerful, but I prefer a Conan the Barbarian type of character. Scaling the walls of the temple to burgle it, and then killing the giant snake when I accidently wake it up.
A bit of cheese: a Half-Orc Barbarian/Theif with decent stats can use Valygar's armour even before UAI.
I am currently soloing an Elven Barbarian/Theif that dual wields Scimitars. A Drizzt kind of character but with a full set of theif skills.
If I ever want a 2nd character, I always pick up a Blade for spells and the Enhanced Bard Song. She then usually sits off screen & sings, and may walk in with the occasional Breach if needed. Often times this is Imoen.
Many people prefer spells. If that is your thing, then the Kensai/Mage is the way to go. If you make him/her LN, then your familiar can act as a low level theif that can handle all the necessary theiving.
Those are my thoughts.

Sorcerors...
Fable, I think the point it that sorcerors don't need to decide how many Stoneskins (for example) to memorize before resting - so long as they have any spells left at a given level, they can pick any spell they choose, where regular mages have to select specific spells to have available. Cast times are, of course, no different as you said
Sorcerors do have limitations - the limit of five spells per level means that some special function spells may just never get learned - but those can often be offset by other characters, scrolls, potions, items, etc.

@Nephtu, you're of course correct, but that's very different than what Rat Queen said. Having a zero spell prep is *not* a feature of any class. There are objects that will lower your spell prep time, but sorcs are not inherently quicker with casting than mages, or vice versa.

With all due respect, I didn't shoot down your "theory," and there's nothing in my choice of language of indicate that. You made a signficant misstatement ("Sorcerers require NO spell prep") that could have had new players thinking they could use sorcs and get a zero spell prep time. It was wrong, but mistakes happen all the time, to all of us. What sets people off from one another is the gracious way some react when they're corrected.

fav classes
I cant pick just one.
I dont like to think about what is best (toughest/most effective); im more interested in what is most fun to play.
Right now im playing a skald and enjoying that. I also like the swashbuckler, the druid kits, fighter kits and paladin kits.
Most of the kits are great actually.
In terms of effectiveness, monks are very effective.....

the Archer is my favorite class, get some nice +3 arrows, good bow, a thaco so low you couldnt even shake a stick at it, 5 shots a round normally, improved whirlwind=10 shots per round at about 30 damage per shot comes to whopping 300 damage per round and thats not counting critical hits and arrows of dispelling to take out those pesky wizards...nice
