Npc's for an Archer?

Post by Eltanin »

I have begun a with a ranger-archer and the npc's I sure want in my party are:

Minsc
Jaheira
Imoen
Jan

But, I can't decide who put in the 6ª position. Maybe Keldorn or Anomen or Haer'Dalis?

Thanks

Hmm..

Well, season to taste, of course.

You could use some priest support there, as Jaheira is only a half-priest (though she's a kick-butt front liner), so Anomen would certainly be viable, though you may find his personality a tad grating... I'm sure Keldorn or HD could both work fine, too if you prefer,

I'm guessing you're avoiding evils, but why not Aerie, Mazzy or Valygar? You'll end up with a very melee heavy party with any add but Aerie, but that's cool - strong melee parties chew through encounters pretty nicely.

I would definetly go for Aerie, C/M are awesome spellcasters, plus another cleric will be useful (Jaheira can concentrate on druid spells).
With Minsc and Jaheira plus your archer you already have enough staying power, so I would consider to eventually put in discussion Jan or Imoen (both T/M), I would keep Imoen (is a better mage in the long run), but though you

will lose Imoen for a while, just try Jan and Haer-Daelis or whoever you like, and when you regain Imoen drop the one you like less.

I would certainly go with Aerie, especially since Imoen won't be available for awhile and Jan, while a great NPC isn't good enough to handle all mage duties unless you want a challenge. I would actually suggest having Aerie replace Jaheira and going with Keldorn as a frontliner with Minsc. Your archer will want to stay back and Mazzy is best suited as an archer as well. Haer'dalis could be a fun alternative as Keldorn's more of a powergaming option.
If you have mods in your game, go with Solaufein.

Remove Jan for Nalia.
Add Aerie.
Remove Nalia when you get Imoen back.

I neglected to add that you may wish to consider Mod NPCs like Kelsey, Tashia, Solaufein, etc.

I pick Jan, because he is a multiclass t/m and I am not sure that the thief skills of Imoen will be enough to detect traps, disarm them and open locks.

With the right equipment Imoen will be a good thief?

In that case, Archer, Minsc, Jaheira, Imoen, Aerie and Haer'Dalis seems a good party.

Jan or Haer'Dalis are both decent choices - it just depends if you want more melee support or better thieving/better mage support. Jan will give you better trapping and higher level spells, while Haer-dalis' songs can help out Minsc and Jaheira as frontliners and can himself melee respectably when needed.

you may run into trouble with Haer'dalis if you are trying to romance Aerie

First off, Imoen will have all the thieving skills you will ever need, even without the thieving equipment.

Second, I think you will have great party and game with an Archer, Minsc, Jaheira, Imoen, Aerie and Haer'Dalis.
I myself pick this party very often (ohh yeah, Archers rock *cough*cough* :p )
You will have enough dialogs, fighters cleric and mage spells and enough women ;)

I would go for a good cleric, whoever that may be (there are several). You will need more divine than arcane magic anyway with such a front-line group

why does no one recommend keldorn ? with the carsomyr he's truly awesome with the high magic resistance ... and i personally find melee heavy parties very easy to use prefer it to my style since it goes faster in my opinion than magic (i do not like difficulties :P )... you should just see how you prefer to play... anyway i think that jan and imoen is a bit of waste of space since they have pretty much the same abilities... u can take imoen for better role playing reasons but i find her whining to be highly annoying and she's too far back in level to take along ... so id go with jan he does the job in my opinion and he's funny... well thats just my humble opinion

Keldorn IS very cool and an awesome fighter, but if you look at the party at the beginning of the post, it really looks like they are goign to need a cleric

Yes..

Our Frind Rudar has it - they probably want some more priestliness.

Poor Keldorn, being an inquisitor, has no spells at all beyond the innate ones. You could just add another melee like Keldorn, and adopt the steamroller approach, heal with potions and regeneration (well, plus the cheesy goodness associated with the simulacrum helm and rod of resurrection)

Have fun, whatever you do!

I would recommend Anomen or Cernd. As was said, clerical power is lacking with only Jaheira. I wouldn't recommend combining Minsc and Aeira without Keldorn there as Minsc can go berserk if Aeria gets too injured. Keldorn is able to talk him down, so these three in combination is less of a problem. Viconia would also help the clerical situation.
