I always have trouble with some of the sections in Watcher's Keep. On level three where you fight the demon mist and have to deal with the roomfull of traps, one of my characters got feared and kept walking over the one resetting fireball trap before I got a chance to bring him back under control and disarm it. Also the final fight before you meet demogorgon with the 5 evil adventurers - I usually have to cheese it and set up traps and a pre-empt cloudkill to take them down.

I think "the hardest fight" is a relative thing. The first time I played Shadows of Amn, I wasn't very good at it, so quite a few of the battles were difficult for me. I didn't meet Kangaxx, the Twisted Rune, the Slave Lords, or Firkraag the first time I played (I wasn't using a walkthrough, so I didn't even know they existed). For that matter, I didn't know that I could do all of the side-quests in Chapters Two and Six because I took the main storyline to heart: I thought that it was important to rescue Imoen as soon as possible, and I thought that I needed to retrieve the Rhynn Lanthorn for Elhan as soon as possible, so I didn't allow myself to be sidetracked, and--BOOM--I was in Chapter Seven before I knew it. The first time I played, the enemies I mentioned above would have been extremely tough for me if I had actually met them.

I couldn't believe what happened in my second game when I met Firkraag for the first time. It was in Chapter Six, so my characters were fairly high in level and Minsc was wielding the Silver Sword. Minsc killed Firkraag on the first hit before any of us had a chance to do anything. It was so unexpected, it took me a minute to figure out what happened. I was ready for a huge battle. Imagine my disappointment. :)

The opponents that are difficult to beat even after I have played the game several times get my vote. If we're counting Watcher's Keep but not Throne of Bhaal, I'd have to say Improved Demogorgon (the Ascension MOD) is the single most difficult encounter I've ever had. (FWIW, the final battle in Throne of Bhaal seems more like a series of fights to me rather than a single battle.)

Firkrag, man! No monster like him can cast improve haste and deal 30 physical damage per hit, let alone his other epic dragon stuff like fire breath, dragon buffet and dragon fear.

I still remember our first encounter: my whole party got wiped out without even touching him... have had a great respect for dragons since then.

If we are counting mods, then the hardest fight was in the Sahaugin City with that Avatar 'swallowing whole' members of my party. All the while being peppered with those stunning, strength sapping bolts. Oh, and the priestess casting some evil spells.

I had already wiped out most of Improved Sahaugin City when i got to this triggered battle.. Quicksaved, then failed maybe six times before I gave up in shame, and uninstalled that mod :)

Saving Haer-Dalis fight for me. Made the mistake of:

1. Being a low level
2. Having all my other party members dead
3. Not having any potions
4. having a full inventory
5. Being a non-cleric and therefore not able to Raise Dead
6. Quick-Saving after I got there

Loading my Auto-Save would have worked, but back at that time I was still new to the game and deleted auto-saves because I didn't see the use in them. If I had known how helpful they are that fight wouldn't have been hard at all  .
No probalo.

I have no doubt on what is the hardest fights ive ever encountered in bg2: The guardians on the last seal of watchers keep, demogorgon is peace of cake compared to this, I wonder how any helmite managed to get past those guards in the past, they must almost have been demigods :D

And the fallen solar at the last node when fighting amellysan, with the entire party utterly fatigued and almost all abilities used up it is an extremly hard fight, not to mention to go on amellysan after that, luckely I had placed alot of cheesy traps around her for the last encounter, so she died when she appeared, cus I never would have made it :D

Even though amellysan i a terribly lame villain, she was indeed a worthy last boss for the bg2 series, unlike irenicus who was too easy :/

The first time I played BG2...i mostly looked into my journal..so i din't know the where things like Twisted Rune and so on..ABout six months later..I played it with a walktrough..and finally got to know al the real cool and difficult monsters :D
The first time I thought that Mencar Pebblecrusher was a real pain in the ASS..because I was a Mage of low level and didn't know the spell Breach and Chaotic Commands..I reloaded this about 23975961596 time's and changed tactics...And I thought that Firkraag also was a real pain in the A...man that guy wooped my ass about 999129843284689912836 times...witch wasn't that fun...With the walktrough I fighted Frikraag with a fake talke stragegy...and discoverd the The Holy Advanger...I restarded the game as a Paladin :D the most fun character (I think) to play BG2
and beat Frikraag's Ass like hell after reloading also a lot of times :D Man I thought I was GOD !!!..And then I saw The Twisted Rune...damn that Shangalar dude is awful with his crew...but I beated them without using cheats :D Since I didn't finished the game and I'm now in Chapter 4,2..I think The Twisted Rune is THE most difficult battle in the game...
Also mindflayers are real bad..with the draining, confusion and domination but i have a cool stragegy for them so they aren't a problem :D :p

Guys, I've just deleted a group of spam posts from this thread. Has to be Kangaxx - spoilerish

This guy (the demi-lich not the first guy)...took me about a million reloads. And I even had my party leveled up pretty high - you know, mages with spell immunity, Kel w/ Carsomyr, etc.

It took FOREVER, and lots of Freedom scrolls. ;) I had to resort to cheese and the 'Banshee strat. guide to give me a couple of ideas.

THAT fight was pretty quick, the Ring is worth it tho. :D

True enough about Mind Flayers.

The people here on the board enlightened me to the wonderful spell "Animate Dead". After a certain level the skeletons turn into Skeleton Warriors - they're awesome and have a high MR and they stick around for a few hours.

At least they divert the 'Flayers from the party - which is the whole point, I guess. :p

Two were pretty equal for me in SoA: Firkraag and the Twisted Rune. Irenicus was just annoying. That bum never dies.... :D :D

I dont remember their names, but, my character is an archer and their swords made them immune to missiles, they were draining levels left and right, fireballs were flying, improved whirwinds being tossed about like candy wrappers......

It wasnt pretty. Only jaheira and myself survived. thank god for mass raise dead.

My only really hard battle was in the secret portal in the Docks District.

The only one that I think I cheesed was on Firkraag and that one normally works on all dragons that you are able to talk to.

*SPOILER*

That would be the feeblemind spell. It will work on most of the dragons if can cast it without being seen.

Have you tried to take on Pontifex(ritual/tactics mod)? That was a very interesting fight!

And how about Eclipse (it doesn't seem to have been mentioned)?

The scripting is ingenious, because it specifically forces you to change your tactics and really think how to approach the situation if you want to survive.

Without any mods, the challenge comes only when you are low level and don't have uber-weapons. Once you are demi-god, with uber-weapons things are not very tactical ~~ you can usually win on the first try (unless you do something stupid). That's assuming you do have some fighters...

Playing the mods on hard difficulty, it's not easy to win. Usually can't do it on the first try. But when I do it right (and get some luck), the satisfaction of victory is great.
