That would depend on your PC.
If you play a thief PC, and don't mind playing evil, i recommand Ediwn, Viconia and Korgan.
Edwin is the best mage, Viconia the best cleric and Korgan the best fighter.
Then you would have a killer 4 member party.
(tried it myself, most powerfull party ever played)
And Edwin and Korgan have some hillarious conversations.

I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

it really depends on what you want to do. in my opinion, a 3 or 4 person party is ideal for multiclass PCs (especially the FMT and FMC classes)
i would recommend:
Roleplaying Good:
- Imoen
- Jaheira
- Minsc
- FMC
Roleplaying Evil
- Edwin
- Korgan
- Viconia
- FMT (or even FT)
Powergaming Mage
- Keldorn (or Korgan)
- Jan
- Anomen
- Mage/Sorceror
Powergaming Fighter
- Paladin
- Imoen
- Viconia
- Korgan/Valygar
Banter
- Minsc
- Jan
- Korgan
- Cleric
i could go on. but the possibilities are endless. it honestly depends on how you as a player play. any NPC can become a powerful asset to a party, so i would reccomend those with better banter (e.g. not valygar unless mazzy is in party and not cernd)

I'm a fan of 2 member parties as well. If I play a male I like a F/M/T with Jaheira - you get the romance plus she is awesome at higher levels which she attains very quickly. If I play a female I like Anomen, again the romance (and a nice twist on the guy who killed his sister) plus he's the only F/C that I know of that can attain +5 in hammers (or anything he can use). His turn undead melts vampires and its a sight to behold. Note, that in either case I usally pick up Immy to finish the game and then do ToB with these 3 plus the half brother - Sarevok (gotta luv him). If you intend to rescue Immy quickly you might want to make your char a F/T instead of a F/M/T. Either way, Immy becomes an uber mage very quickly.

It's a 4 member party, but I'd suggest just playing with those that have been with you from the beginning:
Play with Imoen, Minsc, and Jaheira. This kind of pigeonholes you into playing a Cleric , or multi/dual classed variant of one though, as you won't have one otherwise. Yoshimo seems really nice, and is very useful. You'll meet him while in Chapter 1, and I'd hold onto him.

Jaheira
Possible spoilers:
She leaves a couple times to meet with her Harper buddies. The first time she is gone for only one sleep period (8 hours or so). The second time she goes back to face Harper justice and you need to rescue her. Then there are a couple of attacks by Dermin and other Harper bands. These are all fun fights and yeild up a lot of nice expensive loot. She also becomes sick from a curse put on her by an old enemy (this starts when you enter the tavarn in the docks). I only takes a few minutes of game play to resolve the curse problem though. If you want you can romance her but I usually prefer to piss her off with a few choice dialog options just enough to kill the romance but not cause her to leave the party.

SPOILERS
Go to the house just north of [insert guys name who starts chapter 2 and is a shadow thief here]'s house in the slums, and expect a fight. If you want a much easier fight, pay off his wizard backups in the government section.

Re: cure-curse? SPOILER
I am old (even older than Fable), though perhaps not so wise, but thanks (blush). Talk to the fat guy in the copper coronet - the one you trade with. He will tell you that Belgrade was killed and whatever killed him resembles what Jaheira has. He tells you that the bad guys house is somewhere in the NE corner of the slums. Not to hard to find as its the only place you haven't been yet. Go there and search the room. In a drawer you will find a note saying how the bad guy (sorry can't remember his name now) hired cowled wizards to do his dirty work. If you have a thief set some traps here - just spread a bunch around the small room. Now you have a couple of choices. You can take the clue and go to the Gov District and try to talk to the cowled wizard inside the gov building. He knows nothing. When you exit another cowled wiz approaches you. If you play it right you can pay him not be involved in the next encounter. You can talk him down to 500 gps easily. This is worth some nice xps. The next time you enter the bad guys house he will be there. If you bribed the cowled wiz's they won't show up. If you didn't then you have to fight the bad guy and the wiz's. No probs though because you heavily trapped the room. Any survivors are easily dispatched. Both ways are fun. One is more violent and perhaps more satisfying if you like killing cowled wiz's. Rest a couple times (maybe 3 times) and Jaheira will be totally cured.
