Hi there ,

This my first post in this board . I have been reading the posts for 1 week and at last i decided to register .

Back to topic , I am now at the Asylum , preparing to take the Test of Madness . I haven't come up with a 9th level scroll yet.
When i first learned that i won't be able to cast 9th level spells i was totally frustrated , but on a second thought . It would be nice to import and advance your character further in Never Winter Nights or BG3 (i hope) .

Cheating is wrong. Plain and simple. Cheating at ANY game, especially one with the depth of story of BG2, totally destroys any sense of accomplishment. ("Ooh, look....a dragon. Smite, smite. Yawn.") And as a side note to whoever said "the CLUAConsole was included by Bioware" wake up and think for a minute. Youn had to HACK the game's files to enable it. This is a DEBUGGING feature, not a cheat code. Bioware did NOT intend it to be used by players/ So yes, it is still cheating.

HOWEVER, all that said and done--BG2 doesn't have quite the same range as PnP gaming. If you're trying to recreate a favorite PNP character (one who fits into the experience level framework of the game, not an ubermunchkin 30th-level celestial fighter/cleric/mage/thief or some such), I say go for it. For example, BG1 didn't offer the berserker kit for PCs, but I wanted to play a recreation of my dwarven Battlerager from PNP D&D. So I loaded up the editor and gave him Minsc's berserk ability 5/day. Of course, if you make such a character and decide to use it multiplayer, be nice and let your fellow players know, and get their OK first.

It's all about the ethics of YOU as the player, really. If you want to cheat and have fun with that, just go right ahead - who's going to stop you? And if you don't like cheating, then don't!

And like I wrote before, if you get an unscripted (major) setback due to reasons beyond your control, I don't mind cheating to even the score, so to speak. Also, once you've finished the game once without cheating, it might be nice to see just 'how much juice you can squeeze out of it'.

One thing to note: if you do use cheating in games that involve other, REAL people, be sure to let them know, and get their consent.

And Kordeth (yes, I wrote that about the CLUAConsole), it doesn't matter HOW you enable the CLUAConsole thingy, it's just a plain FACT that it is in the game. Besides that, I believe you can also activate it with 'Cheats=1' in the file, and not solely by putting 'Debug Mode=1'. If they had wanted desperately to keep players from using the console as well, they would have removed it for the final release.

Hard to explain to you, Sleepy. It is the same as trying to make a blind man understand what it is to see. If you don't have it, it's just hard to explain ... Image

Let us stabilize the term CHEAT. Cheat is a hackery. Using a binary editor to edit a saved game is a cheat. Installing a console in BG1 is a cheat. On the other hand, using a documented feature implemented in the game is NOT a cheat. Using documented cheatcodes is not a cheat because the cheatcodes are an integral part of the game. Writing a script that creates a super-super-character is not a cheat because it is documented how to do it. In the other words, presence of any cheatcodes, CreateItem(...) functions and so on is WRONG in the first place. A good RPG should not offer any cheat features. As far as BG2 is concerned, let us ignore the cheat features. Otherwise we do not need to buy the game - we have already won. Let us reserve the cheats only for disasters not caused by us (bugs in the game, etc.)
