Is it required that you go to the underdark? Because it seems really hard. Also Can you get back into the underdark later in the game?

The undedark is one of the coolest parts of the game (IMHO) and yes you can come back anytime (It will be on your map).

Don't think you have much of a choice. You'll end up there after rescuing Imoen (at least I did).
