bugs with damages and animations

Since last week, I encounter these bugs in ToB:
-each time i hit an opponent (with a weapon), a fire aura appears around his feet.
-corpses sometime move (but they're not standing again)
-i had Edwin at lvl 10, and i casted Burning hands on himself. He did 2*12 damage, which is impossible considering that he should deal 1d3+20. i also have bugs like : my paladin has 19 STR, so +7 to damage, and a +3 halberd. But he may deal 9 points of damage to a mummy or any creature, which doesn't seem to be able to absord damages. It happens with all my chars.

I had my HD formated last night, i installed the game again with ToB, and the bugs were still there....
Has anyone ever seen this or fixed this? please help me, i don't know what to do when i can't play BG2 !

are you using a weapon that adds +1 fire damage (like stonefire)?

bad rolls - they suck but theyre part of the game engine. and IIRC mummies do have some resistances

The fire aura appears with any weapon (that's the problem).

I'm not sure that rolls have anything to do with this, or if they do, then we can say that the way damage is calculated by the program is abnormal and not logical !
Look : if i deal 1d10+10 damage, the result could not be 9, it will be at least 11 !

am i right ? sure !

as you said corpses are not really annoying.

But mummies do absorb damage, between 20 and 50% for melee and up to 80% for missile, according to Shadow Keeper.

ah ! Thanks for this information. That's one more problem that goes away.

But about the damage dealt with spells....

I tried to continue my game on another PC, and the bugs reappeaed. I'll try to export my chars and start a new game, to see if i'm definitely doomed.

The damage that he did sounds about right. According to the Player's Handbook for D&D, Burning Hands does 1d8+1. Now don't go yelling at me; I know that, for Baldur's Gate, the damage for Burning Hands might be somewhat different, but unless I'm much mistaken, Burning Hands in no way does 1d3+20, I have no iea where you got that. So Ediwin should have done 2*20 damage.

here is a bit of the descrption you can see in-game (i don't use the manual) :

Any reature in the area of the flames suffers 1d3 hit points of damage, plus 2 points for each level of the spellcaster, to a maximum 1d3+20 points of fire damage. Those successfully saving vs.spells receive half damage.

I had edwin at lvl 10 so...In my game, it works like this : there are two hits, and the sum of the damage can overhead 23. Here's what you can see when there's a saving throw :

"Edwin inflicts x points of damage to someone
someone - saving throw vs.spells"

Perhaps it's this way this spell works in BG2, and the two hits are here so there can be a saving throw....the description might also be wrong, but i'm not sure of the way this spell used to work before my save went buggy.
Can anyone tell me the way this spell works in his game ?

I'm still puzzled about this fire aura...Does it have something to do with a quest ? Has anybody ever noticed it in his game ?

Since i'm french, I'm being taught british English at school, that's why my language might sound strange.

Well i'll start a new game if my PC would stop rebooting every 20 minutes...

As long as you are actually doing damage to an opponent, a random visual effect isn't really a 'problem'.

I've also noticed that, during one game of ToB, whenever the PC got to the edge of a map with the intention of changing maps, a fire burst appeared at the PC's feet while waiting for the rest of the party to get to the edge ('You must gather your party before venturing forth' and all that).

There was no damage incurred, so it was just a harmless visual effect.

The fire thing might be something to do with the Slayer change...seem to remember someone posting that once they'd transformed back, the fire animation wouldn't go away for an unknown reason.

I've read that in ToB, you gain the ability to change into a slayer.
but i'm accessing Watcher's Keep through SoA, and i've never changed into a slayer.

And i believe that only your protagonist can perform it, and the fire aura appears with any of my chars.

Not in ToB. You acquire the ability while on level 2 of the maze beneath Spellhold--the place where you rescue Imoen. You definitely don't want your party nearby when you sleep, there, since the Slayer version of the PC is at first out of control.

Nevermind, i don't have this ability.
In two days i'll be playing a new game, and i'll make saves backups every day so that if the bug reappears, i will be able to continue my game using a backuped clean game, free of bugs.
Thanks to all for your help.

Hum, now i know what the flaming aura was : it was Celestial Fury.
And i've also learned that when there's a "save:1/2" the damage are dealt in two hits, so if there's a save, the second hit won't touch.
I've checked about the physical damages on creatures without resistance, and therre was no problem...
So those bugs were not really bugs...Sorry guys, i got too excited and i was so disappointed...
