LOL
It is as if fate had chosen the game to end 2-2, and italy beeting bulguria 2-1, with italy and sweden scoring in the very last minutes of the game. Italy however deserved it IMO, they haven't played at all focused and have had a very hard time to score goals...

... can't wait to see what the italians make of this result... LOL

Then it is "nice" that our countries are so alike - people from both can easily see the fun in this :D [/QUOTE]

Don't go too far in your friendliness. I'm still grumpy about the Bornholm (or should I say "coffeecup") incident. ;) Still, I can't help but agree, this is going to be fun to read about in the local news. Would have been a pity if Italy hadn't made that final goal...

Well - one of the danish newspaper suggested a trade off.
2-2 in the match and Sweden gets Bornholm..... :D
(Eventhough I'm originating from Bornholm - I wouldn't mind that trade, but that is a different story :D )

But next time we will meet will be in the finals - and then we will not give you 2 easy goals :D

Fascinating how we have been able to keep that old grudge alive. 1814 was it? :) Did a Danish paper offer it for a mere 2 - 2? I think they could have got at least 4 - 4 for it :D

Lets hope so. Still, I can't abandon my favourites, Greece. Amazing they made it through. I can see the party on Mykonos before my inner eye... and it's X-rated :D :D :D

Edit: I tried to find some references on the "urban legend" of the alledged cup covering the island during the 1814 treaty negotiations, but I can't find any. How about you, Xan?

Good games today. Holland 3-0 over Lithuania.

And Czech Republic 2 - 1 Germany. Mind you, this game was quite exciting...with Czech Republic using most of their reserve team, and Germany maintaining an attack posture throughout most of the match. The Czech goalie (Balzec?) was amazing, saved some wonderful shots, and there were a few open shots that Germany missed out, including two easy headers and one Ballack shot on the post which must have hurt tremendously. Hehe.

Anyway, this it! Quarter-finals. In order of appearance from tomorrow onwards...

Portugal - England
France - Greece
Sweden - Holland
Czech Republic - Denmark

Interesting to note that only 4 of these countries going on to the next round have won the Euro Cup. Maybe a new country will win it this time?
Get your popcorn ready...the excitement is only beginning! :D

For the Dutch, the excitement had little to do with the Dutch team playing... during the match they showed images of the German-Czech match all the time, because the results of that match were much more important to us than the match we were playing. Soccer is strange.

Well - this is often the case in the group rounds of such tournaments (and the qualifying).

Overall - this seems to be the most even tournament this year. Only the Czech has showned much strenght so far ....

The quater finals will be exciting for sure.
Could be fun if Greece somehow managed to kick out France :D

Bah - need to start betting more on draws in this tournament :D

Portugal - England 1-1 after the first 90 minutes.
I had hoped England could hold off Portugal, cause I had them as winners.

But 2-2 after silver goal, and it had to go to penalty, where finnaly the portugise won (on a goal scored by their goal-keeper). What was it... 7th round of kicks before the winner was found.?

England won that game with the header from Campbell, yes I'm biased, but there was nothing wrong with it except that it was against the host nation. Incredibly unlucky. Same thing happened against Argentina in the 1998 world cup. When will England have some luck?

7th I think...phew. I'm almost sweating here from watching the match.

Ricardo, the Portuguese goalkeeper saved the kick from Cole, and then went on to score the penalty for Portugal. Portugal wins.

Amazing game...just unbelievable. It'll probably be the best match of the Euro Cup. Anyone who hasn't seen it should watch it again.

I'll add more comments later, but my thoughts were: England playing too defensively after their 1-0 lead....Beckham missed two penalties in the Cup, one against France, and a crucial one just now...Scolari, the Portugal's coach is one lucky bastard. First, his substitution for Figo (which people would have complained later cause Figo is a star player) went on to score Portugal's first goal (Fidalgo)...and then his other substitution, Rui Costa, scored as well. Actually, on the last Portugal match, when he brought in Nuno Gomes, Nuno scored. Woah...

Good quality penalty shots by both sides. Always a lottery draw at this stage.

We were robbed by a blind referee. Sol Cambell's goal in the dying minutes of normal time was legal, even the linesman had awarded it already, the referee denied us. To say I am disappointed is an understatement - we had it in the bag (even though I admit it might've been against the run of play, in fairness to the Portuguese)

We looked out of ideas once Owen was taken off, but I tip my hat to the character of the England team for pulling the game back around again. I hate penalty shoot outs.

I reitterate, we were robbed.

Hm...I saw a few reasons for that header to have been cancelled...one of them being the Portuguese goallie was held down by one of the English player's arms.
However, I think the referee blew the whistle to something that occurred earlier to that. I'll have to read the comments again.

It wasn't Cole's shot he saved, it was Vassell's.

Still think the match between Holland and Czech in the group-play was the better match, but this was dramatic for sure.

I will obviously be checking all the replays, but the point is, Campbell was not interrupting play, no-one that I could see had contact with the goalie

And to add, that penalty spot was in disgusting shape...

Sorry about that, the commentator got it wrong. Cole scored for the England team.

Bull. Ricardo was on the back foot and couldn't even jump for the ball so he wasn't held down. John Terry was actually held down by Sol Campbell (the scorer) so he couldnt've touched the keeper, both players (Campbell and Terry) were side by side and only brushing the keeper, no physical contact that would hold him down even if he could've jumped. Ricardo fell over AFTER the ball went in the net. The linesman gave the goal and had a better view - the ref called a free kick against John Terry - nothing else.

England robbed. Again. I just hope the fans don't react in the wrong way - I'm glad they cheered their hearts out after the shoot out.

And I said some crazy Portuguese name. The scorers for the 2 portuguese goals during normal play and extra time were Postiga and Rui Costa.
For England, it was Owen and Lampard.
